Right-to-work supporters push for zoned approach to state labor policy

GRAND RAPIDS — So far, 34 states have voted on whether to ban union shops. Michigan has never gotten that far, but right-to-work supporters have a new approach.

The latest tactic? A law that allows right-to work zones as small as a county, rather than a statewide ban on union shops.

Some in West Michigan believe this region should be a test case.

The idea gained some steam when West Michigan business leaders made right-to-work their second-highest priority at the conclusion of the 2008 Regional Policy Conference in Grand Rapids. The biennial conference meets for its second session Sept. 16-17, and right-to-work is again a priority topic.

Under such a law, unions are not banned, but a worker cannot be compelled to join and pay dues as a condition of employment. Unions have long opposed such a law, calling it the “right to work for less.”

No other state has regional zones for right-to-work, which would prohibit union shops in some areas but not in others. And the decision still has to come from Lansing, according to the federal Taft-Hartley Act. A county or city cannot act alone.

Also, to address the story directly: Not just no, but HELL NO.

4. Grand Rapids: Home to Gerald Ford, Amway's DeVos family, Blackwater's Eric Prince
Could Gerald Ford even win the GOP primary for his old House seat today?

I don't think so.
