Great. NowThe U.S. Military Is In The Education Bidness
unhappycamper note: Since the ‘Pentagon’ has ‘requested’ that I only post one paragraph from articles on Army Times, and Airforce Times, I’ve decided to give ya’ll an unhappycamper summary of the article and a link to the OP. To keep in that same (new) tradition, I will also do the same for for articles on Navy Times, Marine Corps Times, stripes.com and military.com.

To read the article in the military's own words, you will need to click the link.

(This space reserved for a legally correct snark dump.) It sure is beginning to smell like fascism.

unhappycamper summary of this article: To train Afghan Security Forces, the US military has to teach them how to read. According to the article We The People will be hiring around 1,000 literate Afghans to help. Sorry about your roads and bridges folks, we need to 'get the job done'.

This is becoming an expensive adventure.

That is no small challenge. Literacy rates in Afghanistan are among the lowest in the world. Only about 28 percent of Afghans over age 15 can read and write, according to a report by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.

1. it seems to me that "training" is one mission that is somewhat accepted
in explaining the burgeoning defense budget.

Do we have combat troops in Iraq? No. Our 50,000 troops are there to "train".

Throw stuff out there and see what sticks. This time - it's "training".
