The Federal Govt. is clinging VERY tightly to marijuana prohibition
Did you get a load of C-SPAN WJ this morning?

It doesn't matter about its origins, its targets or even its consequences... The Evil Weed must remain EVIL.

If they have to lock up everyone and run roughshod over local jurisdictions in order to protect the status quo, so be it.

There are some policies that persist in the federal government, regardless of who's running that government.

It's going to be a long, long time before some who is committed to reversing prohibition gets elected to run things and finally enact some common sense drug laws in America.

So until then, the Europeans will continue to set a more sensible example... and we'll continue to shoot ourselves in the foot.

1. Probably holding it as a marker to bargain with republicans as a trade-off.
What a waste.

18. +1 if you meant
the democrats are not going to push it until they are out of power and can use popular support to disrupt the republican platform?

19. I wouldn't bet on either party changing the policy
This is BEYOND partisan politics...

It's ingrained deeply in the law and the body politic.

An entire sea change is going to have to occur before any political leaders are elected to repeal prohibition... It's going to have to start with the, no pun intended, grass roots.

3. Was this a caller, or an official?
The DEA is really holding onto marijuana prohibition, that's certain. They love the extra funding that comes from seizing estates based on false charges.

6. It was a DEA functionary who was being interviewed
Edited on Tue Sep-07-10 09:29 AM by MrScorpio
He even advocated the use of Big Pharma Cannabinol substitute as an alternative to smoking the natural form.

It's nice to know that Big Pharma still has its grubby hooks in the DEA and directs what is "bad" and what's "good" about the use of cannabis.

Hell, I've never even smoked the stuff EVER in my entire LIFE and I can see what's going on.

4. Europeans set many sensible examples while we shoot ourselves in
the foot on many things. The US is a bunch of slow learners IMO and getting worse. US is not prepared to be a world leader in the 21st century. In the US we try to solve most problems by laws and punitive measures, and often fail with our war on this or that. Prisons are also a big business in the US, I'm not surprised.

7. I Wonder If Big Tobacco Is Behind the Frenzy?
Personally, if all the potheads smoked themselves to oblivion, there would be more real and better life for the rest of us...I think Amsterdam showed the way to deal with addiction.

8. They are enforcing the law as it is written. If you don't like it,
you should work to elect legislators who will change the law.

10. I think that was the point of my OP
But in the meantime, we have to deal with how prohibition is crippling the courts, filling our prisons and fattening the pockets of the drug cartels and Big Pharma

11. The law as written says that Bush and Cheney are war criminals..
Funny how some laws get vigorously enforced while others are totally ignored.

The "law" only applies to us Little People, dontcha know.

We must follow it to the letter or our lives are destroyed.

The Bloviated Elites are "special." They do whatever the hell they want, murdering, waging war , torturing prisoners, even smuggling cocaine...and everyone just shrugs....

damn it must be nice to be special...
