4. It has been said for some time
that Rahm wanted Mayor Daly's job. Now Mayor Daly is stepping down. Why does such an unsocialized individual get to call the shots in the democratic party? He has been sabotaging Obama from day one. If he can get the votes in Chicago...more power to him. But after he put down Latinos,it was said he would never get reelected to the House. In an honest election that is.Rahm Emmanuel is a thug.

7. I don't follow Chicago politics too closely and was wondering how
those voters feel about him. I also agree with you that the Dems in Chicago may have other plans and Rahm shouldn't be measuring drapes.....

20. The unions will eat him alive
The closer you get to his district the more people hate him. Most city and state employees that I know are waiting for him to get his arrest warrant.

8. I don't support that.
I live here. Things in this city would be even worse with Rahm Emmanuel as mayor.

But that's probably what we'll get anyway. Or maybe Jesse Jackson, Jr, who apparently was in the thick of it during the sad episode of filling Obama's Senate seat when Blagojevich was Governor.

I wish there was an actual, viable candidate who was even remotely honest. But in the city called Chicago, that might be too much to ask.

Terry, being bitter and cynical in Chicago.

Todd Stroger will probably try to install himself as mayor.

21. Well, Grace, here's a list of possible aldermen who could run for mayor
From the below article:

"Among aldermen discussed as potential mayoral candidates are Robert Fioretti, 2nd; Sandi Jackson, 7th; Thomas Allen, 38th; Scott Waguespack, 32nd; Brendan Reilly, 42nd; and Thomas Tunney, 44th."

Actually, there are some good names there. One sort of leapt out at me...Thomas Tunney. Tom Tunney is the openly gay alderman representing Lakeview. That could be interesting. :-)

28. I'm surprised my alderman (Gene Schulter) isn't on the list. He's pretty active.
I'd vote for Tom Tunney though, he seems like a good guy.

I kinda want to keep Gene around my hood anyway. I never realized how involved he was until I talked to people in other wards who never hear a peep from their aldermen.

And she's not running again.

I actually think Helen Shiller would have made a great mayor. But then, she's not running next year, either...

13. I'm sitting here with pen in hand and checkbook open
I don't know what this douchebag's game is but I can't think of one positive thing he has accomplished for the President.

IMO he is behind the disastrous ongoing attempts at "bipartisanship" that have done nothing but dilute the effect of any legislation this WH has proposed.

And he sure hasn't been silent when it comes to belittling the "base" that got this President elected.

I have no proof of this but I believe Obama was forced to hire him as a condition of Hillary backing away from a nomination challenge at the 2008 convention.

Even if that's true, and he was pressured to take him on, he is under no obligation to keep him and he ought to send his sorry ass packing ASAP.

He probably won't but if an appeal to his vanity could get him to run for the office, he'd have to be replaced. I don't care if he actually gets elected mayor or not, as long as he quits in order to run.

Jesse Jackson Jr?

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets Daley to endorse his candidacy. Not to mention President Obama hitting the trail for him a few times. Rahm in a cakewalk, it's his if he wants it.

2nd ward Alderman Bob Fioretti, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart can easily beat him. I will work just as hard as I did for Obama when he ran for Senate and President to make sure that Rahm will never be Mayor of Chicago.

36. I am so happy that Daley's not running again, but to have
Rahm Emanuel become the mayor would be disastrous. The city's in bad enough shape as it is now financially, and he'll only make it worse. I personally would never vote him and I know a lot of other people who think that way as well. I really would like Obama get rid of him and Gibbs, but I'm just a professinal leftist, so what do I know??

37. I'd RATHER he be in Chicago than in Washington...
Kind of like I WANTED DiFi to run in the recall election that put Arny in to office in California. I wanted DiFi OUT of the Senate where she's done the most damage to replace her with someone more decent. She would do less damage as governor of California than as a senator in Washington.

Which is also why I'm glad that DeFazio did NOT run for governor here in Oregon. I really WANT him to stay in the House (or perhaps later the Senate), to continue to be a voice of reason in congress where he can have the most impact. Kitzhaber will do fine as our governor.

Emmanuel needs to eventually be put out of politics altogether, but in Chicago, he'd do less damage on the nation. Though I can completely sympathize with those in Chicago that would really like to get a more progressive leadership there.

One consequence though had DiFi ran for governor in the recall election is that she would have selected her own replacement in the Senate. Probably would have picked someone like Jane Harman, who would be a disaster as well. Probably would have been better to have just run for governor in the regular election, and let California Democrats pick who replaces her in the primary instead.
