NATO chief: Please don’t burn the Quran in Florida
Posted By Josh Rogin Tuesday, September 7, 2010 - 12:03 PM Share

A Florida group's plan to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11 could hurt the international mission in Afghanistan and put allied troops at risk, the head of NATO said Tuesday.

"I strongly condemn that. I think it's a disrespectful action and in general I really urge people to respect other people's faith and behave respectfully. I think such actions are in strong contradiction with all the values we stand for and fight for," said NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen. "Of course, there is a risk that it may also have a negative impact on the security for our troops."

Rasmussen's comments came just one day after Afghanistan commander Gen. David Petraeus issued a statement criticizing the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, which plans to burn copies of Islam's holy book for 10 reasons they explain on their website.

"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Petraeus said.

Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, the head of the NATO training mission in Afghanistan, told CNN that the issue was already a hot topic of discussion among Afghans and said, "We very much feel that this can jeopardize the safety of our men and women that are serving over here in the country."

The Associated Press reported that hundreds of Muslims in Kabul have already rioted in protest of the planned Koran burning.

5. Jeez, talk about feeding the trolls
Jones and his True Believers have to marvel at how powerful they are to have drawn the attention of so many folks around the globe. They haven't even done anything, and some other nitwits halfway across the globe are already pre-emptively rioting, at least according to the Associated Press. I wonder if I can call in sick for a day at work and use this as an excuse? Should I wait until after they actually do something, or is it enough that their contemplated reprehensible action has upset my delicate nature?

7. Maybe they're frightened about the potential deadly backlash.
Why else are all these military guys, and the Obama admin, voicing their concerns?

This isn't a case where if they're ignored, they'll just go away. This guy sounds determined to publicly demonstrate his hate.

8. IF angry extremists are worked up enough and offended enough to retaliate...
as they sometimes do......I'd be a tad grateful if they could direct their anger, bullets, car bombs, aerial devices etc directly at the Outreach Church (ironic name btw) . The church members have the freedom to speak their mind, they also have the freedom to accept the fallout from those who want to respond with the same amount of freedom as provided by their culture. However, I'm of the mind that an innocent American, that is closer at hand, will actually end up being a mark for that responsive piece of freedom.
