Poll question: Would it be offensive if someone burned the bible to protest Terry Jones |
|
Terry Jones is a peculiarly offensive human being. Could we put the shoe on the other foot and burn the bible to protest his religious intolerance?

1. It wouldn't be offensive to me if someone burned Terry Jones |
|
In effigy of course.
And not the one who directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Perhaps, as was suggested below, in front of his church.

As long as it is the crazy church guy.

2. the outrage would be overwhelming |
|
but I would believe that burning the bible in front of his "church" might make a point.....
as long as he isn't "somewhere else" aka vacation I do not condone it but would love to teach him a lesson
or a kick in the ass

While I am against the burning of books simply because it presents a feeling of anti-intellectualism to me. Books are sacred collections of ideas, whether we agree with them or not. However, I don't think that any argument or action short of giving this guy a taste of his own "hatred" is going to get the point across. While I abhor the idea of book burning, it makes the perfect illustration to a group that would otherwise not grasp the concept of what they are doing. Ideally, I'd prefer to use their own book fire to toss copies of the bible from their church just to twist the irony dagger just a little more.
Maybe I'm just feeling incredibly vindictive these days...

doing this would not just get him going off kilter... but the RNC would completely go nuts.
So if we are going to do something like that, add a flag or two.

8. Offensive to many leftist Christians, who, like us are appalled... |
|
at this plan to burn the Koran.
Why would anyone even suggest such a thing. I am old enough to remember black children firebombed in a church during the civil rights era. Is this next in our suggested "tit-for-tat?"

Even if a book is burned for a reason other than censorship, I can't let go of the nexus.

Hookay... well... it's a good thing he didn't say... JEHOVAH!
Matthias: Look, I don't think it should be a sin, just for saying "Jehovah". Jewish Official: You're only making it worse for yourself! Matthias: Making it worse? How can it be worse? Jehovah! Jehovah! Jehovah! Jewish Official: I'm warning you! If you say "Jehovah" one more time (gets hit with rock) RIGHT! Who did that? Come on, who did it? Stoners: She did! She did! (suddenly speaking as men) He! He did! He! Jewish Official: Was it you? Stoner: Yes. Jewish Official: Right... Stoner: Well you did say "Jehovah. " Jewish Official: STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT RIGHT NOW! STOP IT! All right, no one is to stone _anyone_ until I blow this whistle. Even... and I want to make this absolutely clear... even if they do say, "Jehovah. " People ought to try reading books instead of burning them.

Unless the point is just to hurt and offend people. It does nothing to put forward any positive ideas.

Books are private property. They're purchased from publishers, book outlets, or book stores. Once purchased, the owner can read them, light them on fire, or shove them up their ass, for all I care.
I don't care for hatred aimed at any group of people, however, whether they're Muslims, Christans, or Atheists. The planned burning of the Koran is such an event, and I don't care for it for that reason. But it's still just books, and if they're purchased by the church to burn, the books are still just private property.
Of course, it may not be legal for the church to have such a fire, in which case burning restrictions would apply.
