"One Nation, Working Together." Can WE get together on 10-2-10 on the Mall?
I am almost positive we will be in the crowd next month as, hopefully, hundreds of thousands of people gather in an attempt to demonstrate that Yes, by God, We CAN!

I'm sure that there will be quite a few DUers in that crowd, but I think it would be great if we could be present as a group, with plenty of DU signage and enthusiasm---a "presence", if you will.

Yeah, I know---trying to organize Democrats is worse than herding cats. I'm not suggesting we wear uniforms or even agree on everything. But, it would be great to meet some of the "personalities" on our board and let anyone not already aware of it see that Democratic Underground is supported by some of the very best our nation has to offer.

Anyone interested?

Where would be a good place for us to assemble? I'm thinking north side of the reflecting pool(between reflecting pool and Viet Nam Memorial---the "Wall")and as close to the Lincoln Memorial as possible.

2. Can we organize busses and carpools?
I live in Indiana, round trip bus and plane tickets are $200. A car pool would reduce the cost to $50 a person or so.

If I can't find a car pool I really can't go. I don't have reliable transportation that'll get me to DC, and I don't want to spend $200 on tickets.

4. Seriously, what's the point? MSM won't cover it with more than a sentence,
Obama ignores us, and the Congress is bought and paid for (with few exceptions.) So what's the point? As evidence I point to the anti-Iraq-War efforts and demonstrations.

9. Just wondering---could some unions and local Democratic Parties and civil rights groups
charter buses from their area? Probably would just have to have someone act as the coordinator to allow those who want to buy a reasonably priced ride to do so. This would also allow those who cannot attend but have the means to offer "scholarships", i.e., pay for someone else to attend who lacks the funds.

I'm in southern Illinois. I would be happy to catch a bus in St. Louis, Champaign, Illinois, or either Terre Haute or Indianapolis Indiana.

Anyone got connections with any group that could organize a bus caravan?

17. Just got confirmation on available affordable room there,
but also learned that my teenage daughter's Homecoming is that weekend! I would love to bring her, and my husband is willing to celebrate our 30th there! Perhaps my daughter will see the light and choose to spend homecoming in DC! Otherwise, looks like it will only be me (lest I appear to be a terrible mom, leaving my daughter on Homecoming - if husband is here - he's as good at curling hair as I am! :) ).

37. It's a UU B&B
You have to go online and register at UU're Home -- Unitarian Universalist church members who have B&Bs. UUs are good folk - no prostelytyzing, very tolerant, typically lib / progressive.

There is a DU banner. We carried it in past marches. Not sure who has it?

We should plan for a meetup at a local watering hole on Friday night. In Jan of 07 we met at a great little bar where we had the back room reserved. The Hawk and Dove? Hissyspit was there and lynnesin and earlg and wolverine and I know I am leaving some out but it's been almost 4 years ago. LOL

Your idea of meeting at the reflecting pool is great. :)

I'm staying at the Harrington Hotel. It's close to the mall and the peace crowd always stayed there for the big marches. I highly recommend it.

Anyone going - PM me for my cell.

I'm excited. My son is coming with me and this is his first trip to DC. I also don't think you have lived until you have marched for a cause in DC. One of those must-do life experiences.

26. This sounds like a pointless endeavor.....
Edited on Tue Sep-07-10 09:20 PM by Joe the Liberal
I hate to sound pessimistic but this seems like a giant waste of time. As a previous poster stated, the media won't cover any of it, no one will notice much less care, except for those at the actual gathering of course. And we'd be lucky to get even one tenth of the crowd that Beck had at his Klan rally errr I mean "restoring honor" rally.

We don't have wealthy AstroTurf organizations like Fascist works aka "Freedom works" to organize people and bus them in with their millions of dollars. We also don't have billionaire neo-fascists like the Koch brothers too fund our so called "grass roots" efforts and we don't have a big nationally known individual(or individuals) to head the event. And last but not least we don't have an ENTIRE "news" network (watched by millions daily btw) to promote and fully cover the event.

27. I think you'll be pleasantly mistaken about the attendance numbers.
During the Reign of Error, anti-war demonstrations throughout the decade had attendance numbers that would make 9/12/09 and 8/28 look like parking lot gatherings. We don't need several media channels to incite us if the message is clear and around a common cause. Several dozen major labor groups are sponsoring this rally. I predict at least 100-200 thousand, if not more.

Unfortunately, the media coverage part will still be true. :(

I've never been to a rally of any sort, political or otherwise.
I have issues with crowds larger than, say, six people.
I've never once been further east than western Montana.
I'm (to be frank) scared to death of travel.
I'm (to be frank) scared to death of large cities.
And to be blunt, I would have to struggle to afford food during the trip, nevermind anything else.

BUT... God help me, I'm trying like hell to figure out SOME way to overcome all that and attend. This is just so damn important.

I'll go back to lurking now.
