Well... it's looks like this month's "distraction issue" has been decided... |
|
How we keep helping the Republican party avoid talking about their domestic agenda:
June: "Brown people are coming over the border and killing people!" July: "The courts overturned the will of the people in California!" August: "Should a mosque be built at Ground Zero?" September: "Is burning the Quran an exercise in free speech?"
The GOP knows that 60% of the easy-to-scare populace would be in favor of burning the Quran, so even if the GOP agrees that it is wrong, they will say nothing.
...and instead, we'll play right into the GOP's hands by talking about NOTHING ELSE but the Quran burning for the next two weeks to a month. Thus keeping the "Obama is sympathetic to muslims" meme out there, and ignoring the GOP's anti-middle-class agenda.
I can hear the GOP minds churning: "...right after Obama makes a barnburner of a populist economic speech... gotta get it off the front pages. How can we turn the narrative back to talking about the scary muslims?"
Everyone of us who elevates this issue over the next few weeks is doing the right-wing's dirty work for them.
The new "Southern Strategy" is to talk about immigrants, gays, and muslims 24/7.... all three groups get the teabaggers in an frothy uproar and keeps them fired up.
Yes... our position is correct on these issues... but our position is also a minority one. The GOP is using the media to keep wedge issues in the public consciousness instead of issues where we might ALL unite against the assault on the middle class.
Wonder what October's will be. Is it time to focus on the "war on Christmas" yet?
Sigh...

1. I wish I could agree with you that it is a distraction |
|
but then again I do get it... what it will engender, and what is already engendering.
Oh and that preacher will have blood in his hands... not that he cares.

5. You're missing the point too... it doesn't matter that you are right (and consistent) on the issue |
|
What matters to the GOP is that *THIS* issue is what you are talking about for the next two weeks.
It fires up their base... and gets us playing defense on THEIR turf.
yes... we're right.
That doesn't matter. We'll be spending the next several weeks talking about this... and pushing Democrats further back in the polls in the process.

11. Whether or not it forces us to defense is beside the point, I think... |
|
...which is to draw as many hateful pinheads to the polls as they possibly can.
Dissipating our energy is just gravy.

2. I would say that burning the Koran is as much free speech as burning a flag.. |
|
But what would I know, I'm hobbled by a foolish urge to at least appear consistent which means I'd never get anywhere in politics.

3. You're missing the point.... doesn't matter where you stand on this issue... |
|
...the fact that it will be issue #1... 24/7... for the next several weeks... is the RWers' goal.

6. It's so obvious that it goes without saying.. |
|
Of course it's a distraction, distraction with culture war issues is what the Republicans *do*..
I just wish a that a really significant percentage of Democrats wouldn't go along with them..
