This Koran burning Pastor is just a publicity seeking opportunist.
Those who use religion to further their own agendas are disgusting. Ugh.

1. So some caller into one of the radio shows said today.
I can't remember if it was Thom Hartmann or Randi's show right now. However, it seems since Petraeus came out and said this action was a danger to our soldiers, isn't there a law somewhere that can stop this? I would even say that it could be treasonous putting our armed forces in unnecessary danger.

2. And for what? What is the point?
He just wants to be the center of attention and he is willing to risk peoples lives to do so. Irresponsible creep.

3. Apparently, he has some money scam going.
Also he has been described as somewhat illiterate. I can't believe a goober like him will be allowed to create an international incident?

7. He will
and some people will die. The pubbies will milk it as far as nobody on our side of the conflict is killed.

The courts could intervene, but the calculus in DC land must be... we are damned if we do, and if we don't... but the words that this is the greatest civil rights issue of our generation (Islamophobia) we are getting there. The moral cost stopped the KKK (And some good ol' fashioned FBI work). We might need that too.

16. On what basis could the courts intervene?
Aren't we incapable of action here?

17. If and only if they believed it could lead to violence here
they could place an injunction. It would be rare as hell by the way. And I can see the ACLU stepping in on valid reasons by the way. Our courts don't have any standing outside US borders so what happens in Kabul, stays in Kabul.

Otherwise, legally... they were not given a permit to assemble, so the cops might stop them... They were also denied a burning permit, that is a misdemeanor, leading to a ticket.

Here on the permit

Tejinder Singh - AHN News Correspondent
Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) - The State Department confirmed that the local civil authorities have refused permission to Terry Jones, pastor of the 50-member Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, for his controversial plans to burn Korans in memory of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley at a press briefing on Tuesday told journalists, “We really have here is a bully pulpit. The community is going to do what they do,” noting, “The city government has declined to provide a permit for this event.”

On purpose I cited a foreign paper by the way... so you can see what they are saying. It is not pretty out there.

18. Hasn't the local government decided this is not protected speech then?
I had no idea he applied for a permit. Interesting.

20. It is a permit for assembly,
it goes beyond a certain number of attendees.

Traffic, plan for evacuation, EMS, done a few of those.

And the city said no... so theoretically the cops could come in and stop it.

It is not on free speech grounds but on too many people assembled grounds.

Either way this bastard wins or "wins."

25. Since he was denied a permit for burning, I would like to see the fire department show up
And hose down anyone who tries to go out with accelerants or a way to light the books. I can remember all the times fire hoses were used against peaceful demonstrators, why not against these morons?

28. I suspect that might be part of the plan
I fear they will not be able to stop it, but they will throw the book at them... which in this case is a fine...

That is unless somebody gets really stupid and assaults a police officer.

6. Armed forces? How about regular public too!
This merely justifies Bin Laden's call for Jihad (In the eyes of those who may be on the fence). This could spark retaliation against those who have done nothing.

10. Well, I have been considering a move to Kuala Lumpur
Which is a Muslim city. However, who knows what kind of reaction this could spur there. My friend, Rich, lives there now and he's concerned. I was also planning on going to XinJiang later this year, again, who knows what this could do to the climate.

Hey I CAN PASS as a local... there's the ticket!

No, you are not paranoid, neither am I... but many of our more ahem... provincial Americans simply don't get it.

23. It is about making the election about religion.
There is an attempt to paint Republican Right as the Christians, and Democrats as something else.

So when people defend simple common sense rights, a group of people will put them in that group, instead of seeing they are protecting both groups rights in society, since faith should not be coercion.

It is probably an election stunt for the Republican base, and the left jumps in to paint themselves as 'Islamic' in the macros of the far right.
