CNN: Palin pick 'panicked' Meghan McCain, made her cry
Palin pick 'panicked' Meghan McCain, made her cry
Posted: September 8th, 2010 09:39 AM ET

(CNN) – Her father's surprise pick of Sarah Palin to be his running mate so shocked Meghan McCain that she became hysterical and "panicked," the Arizona senator's daughter told Jay Leno Wednesday.

"I found out an hour before I went on stage with her. I think they were scared I would say something or whatever. Like the rest of the country, I had no idea who she was and I was actually crying on the bus on the way to the rally," said McCain, who is promoting her new book, "Dirty, Sexy, Politics."

"And then I found out who she was, and I remember being on stage and distinctly thinking, 'God, let her not have any skeletons in the closet. Please God.' And if you see any video footage of it, I looked panicked," se added. "I was scared, just really scared. I didn't know her. "

McCain has not been shy to express her rocky relationship with the vice presidential candidate, whom she has since described as a "time bomb" in her new book.

1. Oh Meghan, just drink the Kool-Aid
You'll see: Your father is the wisest, smartest man the American system has ever produced, and his annointing of Sarah Palin to be the new standard-bearer of the Republican Party is a brilliant maneuver that will go down in history. You just need to spend a little more time listening to Glenn Beck, and you'll be just fine.

23. Yep.
Kristol picked her because she's attractive, narcissistic, corrupt, and trained to be in front of a camera.

4. She was one of the few picks they could have. With the opposition they couldn't have another Anglo
male on the ticket. To have any chance to win they had to have someone who either wasn't Anglo or wasn't male. They also needed someone not so well known to keep from taking the spotlight away from McCain (that part didn't work either). And finally the pick had to appeal to the conservative base. This really produced a short list, but it was the only hope the republicans had of winning.

30. He probably would of been better off picking a white man
I recall my fundy aunt & uncle voting for Ron Paul because Sarah Palin should be at home taking care of her children.

7. It was actually dictated by McCain's appendage
There is nothing that will convince me otherwise.

Anyone that was interested in actually winning an election would have chosen a female with a resume. McCain chose the one he wanted to bone.

I wonder how long it's going to be before Megan McCain figures that one out. I feel fairly sure her mother knew it five minutes after the announcement was made.

13. When have you known McCain to actually take advice from anyone else?
His ego is too big.

I should also mention that if he really wanted to select a female running mate, the best choice would have been a woman others would accept as a "heartbeat away from the presidency". The only people who accept Caribou Barbie in that role are those whose IQ is comparable to room temperature.

If McCain wanted to win, he would have chosen Snowe or one of the "less radical" GOP babes, who actually could discuss policy. He let his member do the talking, and the rest is history. Anyone who noted the looks o' death Cindy McCain was shooting at Palin during all public appearances knew there was definitely some "there" there. The complete lack of "vetting" also tells me that McCain was much more concerned with anything but how the decision would look to others.

17. There weren't that many choices
Who would you have suggested for a Republican woman?

My office had a prediction when McCain won the nomination and another for Obama.

Believe it or not I won with a pick of "Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska"

I didn't do as well with Obama. I chose Diane Feinstein.

Look at the list of potential Republican women.

...................... Keep looking ....................... and looking

I thought McCain needed a woman for sure.

Kay Bailey Hutchison was the first name that came to mind. But she is a terrible campaigner, hates to travel, hates to campaign, hates to debate and wanted to come back to Texas to run for Governor. I don't know if he asked her. If he did it wouldn't have surprised me if she said no.

The two Maine senators. Too liberal for the convention to accept.

That left the governors of Alaska and Hawaii. I looked at them both and thought Palin the better pick.

21. Kay Bailey Hutchinson would have been much more palatable
to the GOP faithful. I wonder if she was even asked. I think not.

Good thing they'll continue to hook their wagon to the trainwreck that is Caribou Barbie.

Let me get this straight - Cindy McCain is the heir to Anheuser-Busch, but the campaign "didn't have enough money" for their own daughter to come along?

that Hillary supporters would vote for a ticket with a woman on it just because there was a woman on it. McCain is dumb.

and the wingnuts would have walked out of the convention. It would have made for some damn good TV.

8. RE: the one-armed black satin getup she wore on Leno?
UGH! Cue Addams Family music. It looks like Morticia had an unfortunate accident with one of her sleeves. She looks cute on the book cover in simple white T and jeans. But that thing was a disaster!

16. I'm a little more than halfway through her book right now
Which isn't hard since it's a very short book. I was the first one to check it out of my library. They told me they just put it out on the shelf a half hour before I got it.

Anyway, from the first half of the book.

She had just graduated from Columbia and wanted to join the primary campaign. Mom and dad told her to go to grad school instead. She insisted on joining. They told her the campaign was broke and she'd have to pay her own way. She joined anyway, and brought two friends from college with her.

So far there has been zero sex in the book. She said she was as chaste as a nun since she knew she was under a spotlight.

She felt like unwanted baggage on the campaign which she obviously was since they told her not to come.

She wanted Lieberman as the VP, but her and her girlfriends assumed it would be Romney. They joked how Romney's "five Mormon brothers" (his sons) would get along with the three of them, since she admits to dropping f bombs in pretty much every sentence.

She only was old enough to vote for President once before her dad ran and she voted for Kerry.

She embarrassed the campaign with some GQ interview which I have no memory of even hearing about.

She was maddest when her mom or dad wouldn't tell her who the VP pick was going to be. Something like, "we talked it over and decided not to tell you." That's what sent her into crying. She felt completely abandoned by the campaign and her family, completely useless and unwanted. -- You know Meghan - they told you not to come, and you would have told your friends and they would have texted it in two minutes.

So far she hasn't really said anything about the Palins other than she didn't know anything about her, she seemed real poised, she brought chaos into their orderly world and they looked like a made up Hollywood family, better looking in real life than on tv.

She felt real bad for Bristol, staring blankly in the back of the bus. Back in 2000, Meghan was 14 and some reporter asked McCain what would hppen if she got pregnant. McCain said that would be her decision. She said that became her nightmare even though at that point she had never had sex. And there she was looking at this poor girl living out her nightmare on national TV.

She very much supported her dad's candidacy, and talked lovingly about all the time they spent together growing up especially camping, hiking, fishing, etc.

So far an okay read, but it really seems like someone making a quick buck off of her name.

That's my bookreport as of chapter 15. I'll report some more tonight at dinner.

So inshort, absolutely no sex, and not really any dirt either. The crying because Palin was picked is a complete misunderstanding of the book. Intentional? or skimming? Either way no excuse since it's such a short book -- 192 pages, small sized pages.

29. Just finished the book
an hour ago. I recommend it. She came off as just a bit of an ego, but not as large as many repigs. She is more of a Goldwater Republican and has some good insights on what the Repig party is doing wrong. No splashy inside the campaign dirty sexy secrets. And she has no problem with casual sex, gay or otherwise.

24. She was very impressive on Rachel Maddow
last night - how I WISH all Republicans could be like her - then we could actually have some thoughtful conversations and debate the actual issues and policies. Honestly, if the Republicans had any sense, they would embrace her and her message and dump all the tea partiers.

31. Who cares what McCain's daughter thinks
Why would anyone pay to find out what McCains daughter thinks. Thats great that she felt bad about trying to do her part to ensure America was ruled by her fathers political party. We all know McCain is a senile pragmatist who will do whatever it takes to maintain power. Her life has been great, she doesn't deserve any more money.
