If everyone just STFU about this asshole in Florida...
he'd burn the damn Korans and nobody would give a shit. Two days later it would be forgotten. Now, it will probably take a whole week to forget about it unless some new shiny thing shows up.

There are only FIFTY MEMBERS in his "church" and the bank is foreclosing on it, but he's got the whole country going batshit crazy.

Get a fucking grip.

1. I agree. We are doing exaclty what he wants us to do. He wanted attention and now he's got it.
But having said that, I admit that I have posted on the subject which was probably a mistake.

2. Wrong.
If everyone just STFU about this, buried our heads in the sand...the event would still go on, and then we'd be wondering why Muslims around the world were incensed. We might be wondering why there was a spike in attacks in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Perhaps there would be a few other major attacks elsewhere, with this being the catalyst.

Actions do have consequences. In this case, this church is playing with fire, both literally and figuratively.

5. But they wouldn't know about it, would they? Because no one told...
them about it.

Even if they heard something, it wouldn't be posted on every fucking blog and discussion group and made such a big deal that the President had to get involved.

9. You can't keep something like this completely hush-hush
Even if the mainstream media in this country hadn't picked up on the issue...even if this had remained solely a local issue...the news would still get out. All it would take is for a Muslim living in the area to take offense, tell someone else about it, and before long it's showing up in Islamic news and internet outlets worldwide.

You can't seriously believe that in this day and age, as connected as the entire world is, that something like this could take place in a small corner of this country and remain completely ignored.

3. The media drooling over it is despicable.
Just despicable. But not surprising I suppose.

4. That stupid bastard would go into hiding real fast if somebody laid a fatwah
on his ass like they used to. The whole fucking thing would go away.

6. That's what DU has become?

8. That ANY of us do is sad.
But you're right, I spoke too sweepingly. Apologies to all sane-minded DUers.

11. Suggest?
I suggest we let the dude do what he wants to his stupid books and ignore his ass. That seems pretty fucking reasonable to me.

12. Too late. Randi Rhodes said an Imam who had been traveling internationally
wrote in the NY Times that every where he went he was asked about this.

The problem is that it received any attention initially.

13. It's kinda like the media love affair with everything teabagger
. . .if three of them show up on a city square with one misspelled sign, the entire national press corps is all over the story, pundits are proclaiming a trend of anti-government "activism" and no one mentions the name Dick Armey or FreedomWorks as the money behind the con-artist con-servative insurgency.

The Right knows exactly how to play the media and the media gleefully plays along.

15. This is all becoming like that episode of South Park about the cartoons.
And when the world imitates South Park, things are fucked up.

16. It has been headline news all over the world for several days
24/7 live satellite news stations such as CNN International, BBC World, Al Jazeera English, Sky News, Faux news are broadcasting lead stories on it, globally.

Faux news is broadcast live all over Pakistan by 84 different providers, as I detailed http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8976871">here.

I'm an expat living in Indonesia and the English language newspapers here such as The Jakarta Post and The Jakarta Globe are covering it, not sure how it's being covered in Indonesian language papers but it's a big story on Indonesian TV, too.

Stopping talking about it on DU is not going to make it go away.
