Who owns the U.K. Telegraph?
Edited on Thu Sep-09-10 05:49 AM by Mimosa
Every other day the U.K. Telegraph runs an 'article' reporting that it's likely the Democrats will lose the Congressional and Senate races in November. They also are constantly running pieces saying the Obama administration is a failure.

Is it a Rupert Murdoch owned publication?

1. It's owned by the Barclay brothers, a pair of rich tax exiles
Formerly, it was owned by Conrad Black, who ended up in prison for fraud.

It is frequently known as the 'Torygraph'. It was always right-wing in its editorial tone, but used to be reliable for news. But in the last couple of years the news articles have also been very biased toward the Right.

The current editor and several of the writers used to be on the Daily (Hate-) Mail, which probably contributes to the paper being even nastier than it used to be.

As for the bloggers, they are mostly a horrifically right-wing collection, including politicians on the far right of the Tory party, both old (Norman Tebbit) and young (Daniel Hannan); several British Christian-Righties (yes, they do exist); global-warming-denialist James Delingpole; a bunch of general all-round right-wing nuts; and as you mention, Nile Gardiner, America-watcher and virulent Republican-supporter.

5. Thanks for the info
I do recall the Telegraph being less partisan a few years ago.

2. Since Conrad Black? Perhaps Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay:
Conrad Black guilty of multiple fraud charges

(snip)

"Conrad Black, the former media tycoon, last night faced years in jail after an American jury found him guilty of criminal fraud and obstructing justice.

The Canadian-born peer, once the head of the world's third largest newspaper group, which included The Daily Telegraph, was cleared of nine other charges, including racketeering. He launched an immediate appeal.

Prosecutors said he could expect to go to jail for at least 15 years, though the potential sentence is more than twice that."

(snip)

Black owned The Daily Telegraph from 1986 until 2004, when Hollinger International sold the Telegraph Group to Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay. Since that time he has had no connection with the newspaper."

3. It is owned by the highly secretive Barclay Brothers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_and_Frederick_Barclay

The paper has traditionally been the House newspaper of the British Conservative Party. So much so it is still nicknamed The Torygraph.

Its online readership has become increasingly US Republican and Tea baggery. As evidenced by the comments. The online edition has responded in kind and moved further to the right.

The paper has moved from initially supporting Barack Obama, it backed him in 2008 to supporting the Tea Party line. It opposes the Conservative / Lib Dem coalition.

6. I remember it did support Obama
That's why the current obvious propaganda surprises me.
