It's no accident that it almost never happens!

28. Awww... don't feel bad!
He's a master at this! Have you ever read The Onion? My best friend fools me with Onion stories all the time!

Colbert is brilliant... his satire is the best there is. There's no shame in falling for it. Now, had you not been able to figure it out after all this fun and explanation, I'd be worried;)

7. That's Colbert at his best.
It's called Satire.

from Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satire

"A common feature of satire is strong irony or sarcasm—"in satire, irony is militant"<2>—but parody, burlesque, exaggeration, juxtaposition, comparison, analogy, and double entendre are all frequently used in satirical speech and writing. This "militant" irony or sarcasm often professes to approve (or at least accept as natural) the very things the satirist wishes to attack."

8. I hope so.
I`d hate to think I am as stupid as the right-wing nuts who think he`s serious.

But if you are correct I feel he made his military audience a butt of the joke.

21. No, you had it right the first time. He was being serious. Big f'n deal.
It's rather pathetic to see so many DUers twist and spin last night's telecast to comfort themselves with the false notion that Colbert is really actually just as left-wing as they are. HE'S NOT. Sorry, but he wasn't winking when he told an audience of Iraq War veterans that they won the war, just like he wasn't being sarcastic when he congratulated Odierno for making the surge work, just like Biden wasn't crossing his fingers when he told Bush that "you deserve a lot of credit." Oh well!

You have every reason to be pissed at Colbert (and Biden for that matter). You were right the first time. They were being serious. "Bu-bu-but how can they betray us like that???" Give me a break, they didn't betray anybody. Sorry if this makes you squeamish, but they're just not with us on this particular issue. BIG DEAL. I'd rather see an audience full of happy troops than a discussion forum full of false satisfaction that a TV comedian is still (*phewf!*) as left-wing as some wished he was.

and he tried to make it funny, but he couldnt. being respectful of combat soldier, being respectful of those there. the general himself said they mde it clear they were not saying end of war, cause it is not. and the end comment, so they are being paid noncombat pay... general... combat pay.

a lot of sublities really slipped by you

31. I was wondering about your name - Con Turned Pro 09
What does it mean?

I'm trying to figure out the 'con' part. Convict? Conservative? Concubine?

And the Pro part? What profession did you start getting paid for in 2009?

33. *sigh*
It means that I voted Democrat for the first time in 2008 and joined DU in 2009. I voted that way because I was honestly inspired by Barack Obama's campaign. His politics are exactly where mine are. I consider ourselves "mainstream progressives." I used to be conservative, but changed my mind, pure and simple. Why? Because I realized that the left, for the most part, is right, and the right, for the most part, is wrong. I credit Obama for bringing me to this realization.

Despite the ups and downs of the past 20 months, I'm sticking by President Obama. He is quite literally the best we've got. I regret that more people on this forum consider him a DINO and other nonsense for being to the right of Michael Moore. It's tiresome. I say stand by our man! (Oh, and I've become a big Biden guy, too.)

well I'd like to see politics go to the left of Micheal Moore, so I guess we wouldn't agree on much, but thanks for bothering to answer my dumb question. Peace.

24. You don't get Colbert
He was genuinely showing appreciating to the troops, who by the way were in his audience. He thinks they got a raw deal and is doing everything to show his appreciation. They did what they were ordered to do and did it as well as they could. There is no doubt that he disagrees with the war and the shifting reasoning behind it. However, that feeling is very separate from how he feels about the troops.
