If Terry Jones wants to burn a Qu'ran then I would be happy
to help facilitate the event by purchasing an airline ticket for him to go to any country with a majority Muslim population and burn it there.

After all if your 'god' is telling to do so then you obviously you have no concern about your personal safety and it would be a much more effective method than hiding behind the heavy security of peace officers in a heavily Christian area.

Won't cost much. Won't need a return ticket.

I wonder how many Christian medical missionaries (who don't prosetylize their religion) will be attacked because of this lunacy.

Edited on Thu Sep-09-10 11:13 AM by hughee99
take you up on your offer. They need to be more like those brave protesters who burn American flags at NASCAR events.

On the upside, if the crowd doesn't kill them for burning the Quran, they will certainly go to jail for doing it since it's not legal there, so you won't need the return ticket either way.

8. Interesting. So if he burned a Koran in the MIddle East he would be lynched and murdered
Or that's what I assume you mean by "won't need a return ticket."

What would happen if I burned a Bible in America?

Am I kind of a bigot for asking that question?

10. Most countries with a majority Muslim population
don't have freedom of speech, religion, assembly, or freedom to demonstrate. You can burn all of the bibles, US flags, or effigies of the president you wish on US soil and it is protected speech as it should be.

14. That's not true. Most Islamic countries extend the same legal protections
to all religions protecting their right to worship. There are laws against prostelying however.

Indonesia, the largest Islamic country, has a specific ideology Panascila that officially extends the same protection for all monotheistic religions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancasila_(politics)

1.Belief in the one and only God, (in Indonesian, Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa).
2.Just and civilized humanity, (in Indonesian, Kemanusiaan Yang Adil dan Beradab).
3.The unity of Indonesia, (in Indonesian, Persatuan Indonesia).
4.Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations amongst representatives, and (in Indonesian, Kerakyatan Yang Dipimpin oleh Hikmat Kebijaksanaan, Dalam Permusyawaratan Perwakilan, dan)
5.Social justice for the all of the people of Indonesia (in Indonesian, Keadilan Sosial bagi seluruh Rakyat Indonesia)

17. Indonesia is certainly not
"most Islamic countries". You do not have freedom of speech, blasphemy is a serious offense in Indonesia as it is in most Islamic countries. Indonesia does not allow anti-Muslim public demonstrations (assembly)...Please, lets not pretend Indonesia or any other Islamic country are bastions of freedom.

28. This is called a "subthread". One in which you stated...
"Indonesia is certainly not most Islamic countries". You do not have freedom of speech, blasphemy is a serious offense in Indonesia as it is in most Islamic countries. Indonesia does not allow anti-Muslim public demonstrations (assembly)...Please, lets not pretend Indonesia or any other Islamic country are bastions of freedom."

My response was directed at that particular statement.

31. And the post I was responding to used Indonesia
to try to prove my post #10(which was directed at the OP) wrong. In doing so proclaimed, (post 14) "That's not true. Most Islamic countries extend the same legal protections", yet only quoted Indonesian law.

Now, again, what in the quote in your post is incorrect? Indonesia doesn't have the level of free speech that is enjoyed in the US. Indonesia does not allow anti-Muslim public demonstrations.

32. My point is that Indonesia is not unique in that respect, many other countries have similar laws.
And they all follow different religions.

You are trying to make it sound like because Indonesia is a Muslim country Indonesians aren't "FREE". Which, compared to what it was like here up until very recently, they very much are.

We've been through all this before, endlessly. I will not allow you to try and portray Indonesia as some kind of intolerant country just because of one law that you as an atheist disagree with.

33. I'm not an athiest
and I really am quite sure Indonesia is a very nice place. I am also sure it is better now than it has been for generations, which is great. It is not my point in this thread or any other to dis Indonesia. My only point is to those who want to bitch about the freedoms which are enjoyed in the US while holding out less free societies as the example of the way things should be.

Edited on Thu Sep-09-10 12:11 PM by Turborama
The offender would deserve all the punishment they'd get. It's their country and it's their law.

Each country in this world is different and each have their failings and benefits.

34. the issue has nothing to do with 'freedom' as you define it

the issue is do they extend the same lack of freedom or protection to other religions.

All of the Muslim countries that I lived in offered the same protection to other religions as they did to Islam.

You would be arrested for burning a Quran as well as burning a Bible.
