Then and Now...Quran Burning |
|
Edited on Thu Sep-09-10 11:31 AM by Steely_Dan
I've given this some thought...as we all have. As a result, I'm contemplating a question and a possible answer.
When 9/11 happened, this country could not have been more ripe for anti-Islamic hatred. It is hard to imagine an event that would have fostered more hatred than the loss of nearly 3,000 American lives. However, while there were indeed radical activities that some found for releasing their hatred during that time, we did not have a Quran burning event like we are facing now.
Of course, the atmosphere has changed, time has passed.
Now, nine years later, we have an atmosphere where actual anti-Islamic activities are taking place. What is the difference?
The only major change was of course, the election of a black President and all the built up hatred that those on the extreme right have heaped upon him. They just can't stand the idea of a person of color occupying the highest office in the land. I'm convinced that these are people that we will never ever be able to reason with or reach.
That being said...
I feel that the current atmosphere that has allowed the rise in anti-Islamic activity when it wasn't as apparent right after 9/11, is a lack of leadership. I hate to say it, but without the strong use of the bully pulpit over the past two years to combat the rise in racial hatred, a vacuum has been created. I would hope that the current Administration would recognize the current atmosphere and better anticipate the mood of the country...not just with the rise of anti-Islamic fervor, but in many other areas.

4. Interesting development.... |
|
The right is now(watch Jon Stewart take on Jones) trying to supersede the prediction by marrying this Jones character with those who want to build the Mosque. Good analogy right-wingers...good analogy. Cripes. Rove, you are so predictable.

"The only major change was of course, the election of a black President..."
That and bombings in Bali, London and Madrid, two wars, various insurgencies and takeovers, etc.

6. Then: think of book burning in Germany in the 1930s. |
|
For that matter, book burning worldwide in the last few centuries.
