As talk of impeachment rises on liberal websites, in the mainstream media, and even in some conservative circles, Americans who are fed up with the illegalities and corruption of this administration gird themselves in anticipation.
Everyone seems to be waiting for impeachment to happen.
But impeachment is not just going to happen.
If impeachment of these criminals occurs, it will only be because Americans forced it to happen.
If we want to impeach, we'll have to prove it.
Our Democratic leaders in Congress are dragging their feet on impeachment, claiming it is "off the table," "not under consideration," and "isn't going to happen." Yet Americans are in favor of impeachment (I saw a poll on one of the network sites, I can't remember where, that claimed 46% of Americans want impeachment, only 27% don't), despite the foot-dragging by Congress.
It's just like the war in Iraq. During the holiday season, the television stations around here run little blurbs between commercials from soldiers stationed overseas wishing their families a happy holiday season. But where are these reminders of the war, and the service of our young people, the rest of the time? We don't see these reminders daily, and thus the notion of national sacrifice stays below the conscious threshold of our population. With no constant reminders, the concept of sacrifice is not maintained in the public eye, and therefore many Americans see the war as something happening to someone else, and not directly to them.
It is the same with impeachment. As long as we all talk about impeachment, as long as we all wait for Congress, or the States, to act on impeachment, nothing really ever happens.
Do you suppose our leaders are not taking our impeachment wishes seriously? Given the number of diaries on impeachment lately, if we are all communicating our wishes to our Congressmen, then how can Congress not take this seriously?
Like the war in Iraq, our desire for impeachment has really, on an individual level, cost the average American, well, nothing. If we are to rid ourselves of the cabal that has attempted a coup of our country, then it is going to cost us - collectively and individually.
Since our Democratic leaders seem to quail at the thought of starting impeachment, I believe we need to impress upon them the seriousness of our demand.
Therefore, I am asking every American who wants to impeach these criminals to participate in a national strike and nationwide protest on July 3, 2007.
I ask each person reading this to consider taking the day off on July 3rd and joining me at your local town hall, county seat, city government, or State legislature, to call for immediate impeachment proceedings against Bush, Cheney, Rice, Gonzo, and the rest of the criminal gang currently stalking the halls of power. And if anyone has an in with Media Matters, Democracy Now, or any other national organization, please see if they think this is a good idea and will support it. If we start to organize this effort now, we can make this happen. If even 25% of our nation participates in this, it will send the clearest message to our leaders we can possibly send:
END THIS DEBACLE NOW. IMPEACH.
