I have an idea to boost vote turnout from the LIBERAL discouraged voters: |
|
In every state where you want us to turn up, get a state wide iniative to either 1) Legalize the production of hemp or 2) decriminalize MEDICAL Marijuana.
It worked so well for the right wing nutz with their ban the GAY campaign Why don't we try it? Thoughts?

1. We have a medical marijuana initiative here in AZ this year. |
|
Don't think it's going to help our Dems much. :(

3. I am a liberal discouraged voter and |
|
I really don't think that would make any difference to me personally.
I will hold my nose and vote a Democratic Ticket, but beyond that they get nothing from me.

4. If the Democrats want to boost our turnout, |
|
I think making us feeling welcome or attempt to pass one of our ideas every once in a while would suffice (beyond a decades late minimum wage every once in a while). But they know we'll turn out anyway and the "independent", "middle", or "unafilliated" voter they concentrate all their efforts on might not.

6. I am not talking about what 'the Democrats' should do. I am talk (well writing) about what WE can do |
|
The idea is to get some POLICIES on the ballot. It is not about promoting a PARTY as much as pushing in a LIBERAL direction.

I'd love to see these initiatives but hadn't thought about your motivation. I'd guess it's too late for this election.

9. Liberals don't need encouragement to vote. |
|
Liberals understand what it means to vote, and a real liberal would have to be dragged away from the polls kicking and screaming to not vote.

14. I think you missed the point... |
|
Any TRUE liberal, regardless of the degree of discouragement, would vote. Period. And you can damn well bet they won't vote for a Republican.
Any self professed liberal who behaves differently is not a true liberal.

12. You know, not all liberals support decriminalization. |
|
Edited on Thu Sep-09-10 02:55 PM by Xithras
We don't have many of them here on DU, but there are a ton of "nanny-state" liberals who oppose decriminalization "for the children".
On edit:
One of the more interesting things that I've discovered during this years Prop 19 campaign in California is the way that decriminalization cuts across party lines. A lot of Republicans support decriminalization, while a lot of other Republicans oppose it. A lot of Democrats support decriminalization, while a lot of other Democrats oppose it.
The deciding factor seems to be your opinion on government intervention in the private lives of individuals, not your economic or political views.

17. I'd say that my Democratic acquaintances are about even split on Prop 19. |
|
You'll notice that Feinstein, Boxer, Brown, most state Democratic politicians oppose Prop 19 in California. It split the state party leadership so badly that the official party position is "Neutral"...the first time the state party has taken a neutral stance on a proposition in recent memory.
Most of the "for the children" Democrats oppose it.

22. LOL! Don't forget that Prohibition was widely supported by liberals and progressives back in its day |
|
This isn't a new phenomena.
When it comes to social issues, there have always been two kinds of liberals.
There are the "Libertarian Liberals", aka "You can do whatever you like with your body, your family, and your business, so long as it doesn't harm other people."
And then there are the "Authoritarian Liberals", aka "We know you don't like this law, but it's good for society and will benefit you, so we're going to force it anyway...even if it takes away your personal freedom. The good of the many outweighs the good of the one."
This was a division back in the 1920's, and it's a division today.

16. How about passing anything that advances a liberal agenda? Of course, this will not happen |
|
because they do not have a liberal agenda. But I do think we have finally found real-life examples of a compassionate conservative approach. Not the change I was hoping for.

23. You'd have better luck with a push for gay rights and |
|
creating programs to combat poverty.
And the problem isn't getting liberals to vote. Liberals are going to vote. They may not vote for Democrats, but they'll vote. I think a combination of programs to help eliminate poverty and a push for equality would definitely rope the vast majority of them in.
