Obama kind of responds to DADT court decision

Kerry Eleveld, Chris Johnson and Andy Towle got this statement from Shin Inouye:

"The Justice Department is studying the decision, including the question of its scope and immediate effect and we expect them to announce their next steps after that review is completed. The president remains committed to legislative repeal of DADT, and he will continue to work with lawmakers to achieve that goal this fall. And he will continue to work closely with Secretary Gates, Admiral Mullen, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff on an ongoing study of how to best implement the repeal."

They really just never can come out and say what we want to hear, can they? But, at least now we've got a commitment that the President intends to have the compromise repeal language pass "this fall." Time is running out.

Chris Johnson also got this from the Pentagon's spokeperson Cynthia Smith:

DOJ and DoD are in the process of reviewing this opinion.

The current law is still in effect.

1. I bet getting that statement was like pulling teeth.

I called my Senators today on DADT repeal. The nice staffer in Senator Durbin's office mentioned that Durbin did support DADT repeal. I mentioned that since a federal judge yesterday ruled DADT unconsitutional, perhaps now would be the PERFECT time to end this.

Of course, we have to wait for THE STUDY in December, complete with the survey results...the spouses, families, pets, etc surveyed about how DADT repeal would affect readiness, blah blah blah.

Still, "this fall", I guess is sort of encouraging. But, still, like the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series, I'll believe it when I see it,

We will need their input on this whole thing.

7. The survey is of no importance. The repeal will be voted on soon.

The permanent repeal of DADT is in the Defense Appropriations bill
which the senate is supposed to vote on in September or October.

8. The problem with that...

is that's it's not a sure thing re: the Senate. McCain, who as we know has jettisoned whatever principles he may have once had, will fight DADT repeal tooth and nail. There's talk about various possible amendments...like demanding ALL of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to weigh in on the document President Obama, Secretary Gates and JCS Chairman Mullen will sign attesting military readiness will NOT be compromised by DADT repeal. This is after the Pentagon study to be released in December. Which Congressional repeal entirely depends.

DADT repeal in the Senate, even included in the Defense Appropriation Bill, will be VERY tough. This is where strong leadership from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue would be welcome...but, as we've seen from this President, strong leadership regarding Congressional legislation isn't exactly his...strong suit.

I'm not even close to being optimistic about the end result. And before you ask, yes I have lobbied my Congressional reps and Senators.
