A recent thread about a failed water main in Reno has just given me an idea:
I thought I'd make a thread to see what the rest of you think.

Here is the thread in question, about the failed Reno water main and the truck which fell into the resulting sink hole:

======================================================================

Now, given how frequently small (and not-so-small) disasters such as this are happening on the local and state levels, I think it may be time for some of our more vigilant members to try compiling these news stories into a special new forum or sub-forum.

This could help out in several ways -- not the least of which is that it will help show whether or not the rate of these incidents is really increasing (which I believe many of us here feel to be true). It would also be a good research repository.

So, who else thinks an Infrastructure forum might be a good idea? Is it worth bringing to Skinner's attention? I'd love to know what other DU'ers think!

Thank you for your time.

6. Well, it would definitely give us something to focus on rather than fighting over.
Failed infrastructure and its related stories are what they are. No opinions involved in the stories, and not a whole lot of opinion involved when it comes to fixing them. Either we do and fast, or we resign ourselves to Third World status for good. :(

2. I think it sounds like a good idea.
We know the infrastructure, in general, is in bad shape.

I'm just now learning about the gas main story that broke today.

10. Your name speaks volumes.
I have a sewer line w/ 270+ households upstream in the middle of the street in front of my house.

If I have an issue I call Los Altos water company.

It might work for a meta- analysis of DU members, but not much else.

Infrastructure is local, "all politics are local", but this site does not seem conducive to your goal.

11. All I want to do is set up a place where news stories about decaying infrastructure can be collected
Edited on Sat Sep-11-10 03:37 AM by Systematic Chaos
I don't know what you're thinking my intent is beyond that.

I suppose "meta-analysis" would be correct, but not one of DU members; rather, one of our nation's infrastructure in general.

And as for what we would do with said collected stories, they'd make a good reference and just maybe convince some key people that a public works project of epic scale is urgently needed. And if not, what can it hurt?

Edited to add: And what does taking a swipe at my user name in relation to my OP accomplish, exactly?
