U.S. poverty on track to post record gain on Obama's watch
US poverty on track to post record gain in 2009

By HOPE YEN and LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writers Hope Yen And Liz Sidoti, Associated Press Writers – 5 mins ago
WASHINGTON – The number of people in the U.S. who are in poverty is on track for a record increase on President Barack Obama's watch, with the ranks of working-age poor approaching 1960s levels that led to the national war on poverty.

Census figures for 2009 — the recession-ravaged first year of the Democrat's presidency — are to be released in the coming week, and demographers expect grim findings.

It's unfortunate timing for Obama and his party just seven weeks before important elections when control of Congress is at stake. The anticipated poverty rate increase — from 13.2 percent to about 15 percent — would be another blow to Democrats struggling to persuade voters to keep them in power.

2. does`t matter at this point...
it`s the perception that the dems did`t do enough. the problem the dems face is convincing the undecided voters and those who are unemployed to stick with them. that is going to be a tough sell with the majority of the media against them. a whole lot is riding on this election and i hope that the party`s message is effective..

10. The dems have picked their strategy
The Rahm/Harry Reid strategy was to compromise whatever was needed just to pass anything, and then blame the Rethuglicans for their inability to get anything substantive passed. By substantive, I mean enough of a true stimulus/tax policy/healthcare reform to actually turn the economy around, versus simply slowing down the decay.

Instead of fighting the rethuglicans tooth and nail, it was compromise, compromise, and then roll over instead of actually making them stand up and filibuster for days on end. This would have shown Americans the truly evil, mean spirited, deliberate destruction perpetrated by the Rethuglicans.

The current Dems in power chose not to do this and now are forced to rely upon the "MSM" to get their plaintive whining about how the big, bad, rethuglicans (in the absolute minority) tied their hands and wouldn't let them fix anything well enough.

This is rightfully perceived as weak and weak does not get elected often. Especially when confronted by a very, strong, ruthless and malevolent institutional evil that is modern America's Republican Party.

9. The day Edwards withdrew from Campaign 2008...
...was the last day The Poor were mentioned as an important issue for the Democratic Party.

11. True!
I knew the poor, and the soon to be poor, i.e; the middle class, were going to be screwed in ways that they could not even imagine.

Obama does not identify with being poor, or even middle class. He identifies with the privileged, ivy league, Wall Street cronies with which he has filled his administration.

He simply does not understand economic policy or the vast majority of people who aren't rich. He simply buys into the Ronald Reagan nonsense that a rising tide lifts all boats. Except the poor don't have boats. So as in New Orleans, the poor are left to deliberately drown.

12. Obama definitely buys into trickle down -
he may understand the issues of race, but he does not understand class. He identifies with owners and is very clearly working for them.
