THANK GOOD I don't have cable.
A while back my wife and I decided to get rid of cable because Comcast was charging OUTRAGOUS amount of money for what we had... (we didn't have HBO or anything like that)Just the basic digital package with the sports tier and we where paying $150.00 a month.

So we basically stuffed back too them and told them to stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

We will admit we do miss somethings (My wife misses Dr. Who/BBC America) Most of the stuff we watch we can find on the computer OR we wait and buy the season.

We are surfing the internet and see the 9/11 stuff we are so grateful we don't have cable.

Don't get us wrong we do mourn and respect those who lost loved ones. My wife knew a girl from college who basically lost her parents and brother in the attacks. Parents where in the towers and brother in the Pentagon. We understand and respect the right for them to mourn each anniversary and have no problem with that.. We don't want to sound rude or cruel...

What we are sicken by is the Media and Political shows that have happened since that day which seem to get More and MORE sickening each year.

That is shameful and should be ended.

1. Got some Stones on the CD player
And college football on the tv, of course with the volume turned down. When halftime comes, if I see one 911 tribute, the tube goes off. I'm with ya!!!!!!!!!!

3. Motorola will turn off big dish the first of next year, so we took a jump.
It is amazing how much we receive free, 4 PBS channels, NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, CW, This, Viper weather, and My Network. But what is the most fun is our new Roku, with streaming netflix and Starz.

8.99 a month, I can handle.

Tell your wife, I just finished Torchwood, and am now catching up on The Doctor. :hi:

11. Yep, the Roku unit is incredible!!! Dumped all of cable except for basic for
a couple of reasons. With Roku there's no need for traditional cable junk.

13. Husband, a self-described "conservative" who sides with we "liberals" when
pinned down, has to have his Maddow fix, weekly is okay. Roku gives him that. Since cable and dish charge extra for MSNBC, I would love to see them set up an independent streaming Roku feed.

4. I don't have cable too, and
I get most of the news on the computer.
.Many clips from favorite commentators are posted on DU..

I guess I have saved thousands, as I would have gotten a package for about 100 a month..
Life goes on.
Some of that goes into savings, some into other forms of fun, and some into contributions for our candidates each election cycle.
I don't miss it. Somehow interacting with real people seems more important to me.

5. You can also use Roku Roku.com for $9 per month with just a broadband internet

connection. We've dumped all the extras on cable except very basic for a couple of reasons. All the entertainment now comes in on Roku so as to not tie up a PC and to directly feed a large TV.

7. six years cable free and never looked back...
If I must watch tv, I have a tuner on my lcd computer monitor and a tiny digital portable, but I rarely rarely do. I find most things I am interested in watching online or I rent the occasional dvd.

XM radio lets me listen to news of all kinds, including BBC, and MSNBC if I desire to hear pundits. Today I'm listening to NPR because it is NOT all 911, all the time.

8. I'm managing to miss all the crapola but I'm dreading next year
because we all know the 10 year anniversary is going to be even nuttier than this one.

I generally write off all the history channels on weekends, anyway, since it's all woo-woo crapola for stupid people who will believe anything.

I only got a dish 4 years ago for the first time in my life, so I'm still enjoying it. When I find I'm spending more time with the set off than on, I'll dump it. It's getting a little closer to that, now. I find I generally prefer listening to good music.

9. There's only so much grieving one can do before it's time to move on.
Unfortunately we're stuck with an hours-long format reading thousands of names slowly. It's going to be a grim holiday for years, I'm afraid. Time to turn off the TV or watch the DVR or something.

This maudlin fetish is sick and wrong, all the more so because it was twisted and used as justification for launching a war against (IMO) a band of stateless criminals, then an illegal invasion of a country that didn't attack us.

10. You might checkout Satelite systems. Often 60 bucks or less a month.

If you ever start jones-ing for TV again.

Our household was TV free for two years, and we found many excellent radio shows that made our lives worthwhile. Then we got ensnared by a "cheap" one years rate of $ 29 a month.

Like you are mentioning, after the year is up, it is over $ 130 a year, just to watch programs heavily loaded with commercials and propaganda style TV shows.

12. May I ask - what do you do for internet access? DSL?
just curious...

I was thinking about dumping cable - we just have basic, but internet access over cable appears to be the best value around (I hate calling something so expensive value) but alternatives don't appear to be great...

15. I have the same question. It also seems like sports have been moved largely to cable channels.
"America's game" is controlled by "Comcast's (near-)monopoly" these days.

18. Thank you

I have one of my customers who is on that, uses a dongle off his laptop. I think it cost them several hundred a month but they have half a dozen phones. I will have to check what that is for 1. And that's mobile as well, so there is a plus.

Again, thanks.

20. I'm too cheap to pay the money and too liberal to line the piggy's pockets
My little antenna provides all the TV I need, and I can watch Highway Patrol, Paladin, and Gene Autry online.
