Just had to hang up on a friend. He said Beck and Olbermann were the same
only on different sides of the political spectrum.

2. Couldn't slam it, I was on my cell. But I pushed the 'end' on the
touchscreen really really hard.

I told him he was severely uninformed and gave him a project. Youtube both of them and get back to me. He said he didn't have to because he has seen them both, but didn't see Beck ever compare anyone to Nazis. WTF?

3. I get tired of that argument too
They can't defend their choice of Beck so they resort to comparisons.

I don't know where to find that video right now, but it's out there.

On edit:
I found it

An unfortunate, yet all too common characteristic in 21 Century America.

5. Olbermann does *not* bang the drum for self-serving rallies at the Lincoln Memorial...
Nor did he ever level any baseless charge at Bush along he lines of what Beck did to Obama -- the whole "deep-seatred hatred for white people" bit of business. Also, Olbermann is smart and savvy, easily an intellectual,, and never resorts to cheap theatrical tricks like crying for the camera, as does Beck repeatedly.

I could go on, but the point is made.

9. That's why I watch Maddow
I'm not aware of any commentator on the right that can compare to her.

Beck and Olbermann are, otoh, somewhat alike. They are both clowns. Personally, I suspect it's a schtick to a large extent on both of their parts.

Maddow and big Ed I take seriously. Olbermann? meh...

17. I realize Olbermann is somewhat
of a secular saint here, and I give him credit for being the first of the cable leftwing firebrands. I also give him credit for not being a simpering ninny, but instead having some guts and some character... (I think the sports commentator background helps) but c'mon.

He's a clown.

His behavior is SO lampoonable. He inspires fullblown MEGO with me.

Maddow, otoh is smart, even keeled, ANYTHING but a clown, entertaining, charismatic, etc. etc.

23. Even Oreilly
does that too, though. He does the whole self-deprecating thang too despite the fact that his ego is huge. Is THAT an act? Probably.

Like I said, I have some respect for Olbermann, and I give him credit for helping to crash the party and get us in, but I just think the clown schtick gets old.

I see it as entertainment whereas I see Maddow as actual intelligent commentary.

get ya' all worked up, huh?

I don't think the poster is pissed because a crime was committed (yeah, yeah, I know, you guys HATE that "hate speech" is a crime...and try to bring that into every discussion you have) but because his friend has all the intellectual discernment of a septic tank.

24. No, it's not
Not in the US at least. There is no such crime as hate speech. There IS in England, the UK, France, Canada, etc.

What Is the case in many US local jurisdictions, as well as federal is that hate crime enhancments exist. That's NOT hate speech.

For example, we don't criminalize holocaust denial or vilification of religion or racist speech etc.

But an assault done with racial animus can often be prosecuted as a hate crime, which increases the penalty for the assault. But there still must be an underlying crime TO BE enhanced. There is no such hate speech crime in the US. That would be unconstitutional.

In the case of hate crimes, there need not be ANY speech whatsoever. It's a crime enhanced by certain motivation (racial, etc.)

26. You're absolutely correct

My snark overcame my knowledge of the law.

You have skooled me.

I do, however, maintain that there are those who HATE that "Hate crimes" are distinct from "regular crimes."

Hope your Sunday is peaceful and bountiful :hi:

I do know a fair # of people who are against hate crime enhancements. Some think that way for entirely honorable reasons, and others are just bigots I think.

Have a good Sunday too

Merely that they both make money by commenting on the political scene; in that respect, they are the same. They are both comedians.

"Why fight with a friend over these people you don't personally know?"

Do you need to know someone to advocate for justice for them? Or systems that have a better chance of treating people with justice?

There is a trap, what it does is try to get you to only look at things that are pleasant in a bubble. If you can not worry about people you do not know, And only hang around people that are in a good situation, and you never have to face any responsibility as a brothers keeper.

I believe in fighting for people that say the right things, and getting people that say the right things with such overwhelming majorities, that if they don't do those things, it becomes obvious.

Same thing with elections, make the outcome so obvious that if PR or stolen elections tries to make it seem something else is happening, those things are shown for what they are.

One way to determine if a person will do good is get them in a place where they can have an impact and see what they do. That is why I defend the Democratic positions on many things, if Democrats when given the ability to do those things do not do them, they double their fault. Once for not doing them, and once for saying they would.

The best thing you can do to either a truth teller or a liar, is give them power to see what they will do.

29. I agreed with him that they are both political commentators
but with different viewpoints, but that's where the comparison ends.

The entire argument 'both sides are the same' is bullshit. Of course there are exceptions.

27. I have a relative who not only thinks this (though he also thinks Beckkk is "more talented"
which I guess is true if lying is the criterion for defining "talent."

He also equates VP Biden and half-Term Barbie, though he again gives Palin the edge in "talent."

How can you possibly have a rational discussion or debate with someone that deluded?
