Watching 48 Hours: Innocence Lost on CBS
Edited on Sat Sep-11-10 09:52 PM by LiberalFighter
It occurred in Austin TX.

They showed a sign on the door to an interrogation room at the police to be quite. Not quiet but quite.

5. The dumming down of Amurka worked.
It's the only way the extremely rich, powerful minority could gain & maintain power for so long.

6. What are they trying to say?
That they don't charge people to use the library, or "keep out?"

Or, no missions may be added? Huh?

20. It is a Keep Out sign. But who cares what they are saying. It isn't
spelled right.

7. Caption on some runway fashion photos said
the models run the gamete from size zero to size one.

People need to realize that spell-check is part of the problem.

11. Sure they do, but how does having a dictionary help if you don't know how to
spell the word to look it up?

Duh!

12. What people used for decades to find the spellings of words.
It does take time, patience & diligence.....all lacking in today's society.

14. Spellcheck is a recent development.
It only catches obviously misspelled words, not words that are used in the wrong situation. Spell check is THE PROBLEM most of the time now.....one must PROOFREAD, too. But that assumes one is educated enough to know if a word is used in an improper context.

22. You said it. Kids! Spell check! My pet peeve---to/too.
Spell check just does not help with that one. But it makes the writer appear ignorant.

23. From/form hem/him their/there/they're so/sow very/vary
The list is endless.........ignorance fully displayed! PROOFREADING is still necessary!

I remember about 15 yrs ago the elementary teachers at my kid's school telling me that it was no longer necessary for them to teach spelling because spell check was making it obsolete. As an educator, I couldn't believe my ears. Now as a HS teacher, I suffer through the consequences of that "educational" decision......so does the rest of the world. These types of decisions are why we are so low on the list of industrialized nations when comparing literacy.(sigh)

9. A local restaurant's scripted, neon-lit sign reads "dinning room".
Why the owner didn't send it back to be re-done is beyond me. Maybe it explains why I live in a repug area?

17. We noticed that too. Two questions came up:
1. Why did the courthouse leave the sign up?

2. Why did CBS show it? Did they not notice it?
