Reuters: Boehner would back U.S. middle class tax cuts alone

--snip--

The top Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives said on Sunday he would support an extension of tax cuts for middle-class Americans even if tax cuts for the wealthy are allowed to expire.

Representative John Boehner said President Barack Obama's plan to renew lower tax rates for families making less than $250,000 but let the lower rates for wealthier Americans expire was "bad policy." Republicans want to extend all of the cuts passed under former President George W. Bush.

"If the only option I have is to vote for some of those tax reductions, I'll vote for it," Boehner said on CBS's "Face the Nation" program.

"If the only option I have is to vote for those at 250 and below, of course I'm going to do that," he said. "But I'm going to do everything I can to fight to make sure that we extend the current tax rates for all Americans."

--snip--

Wow. I had no idea they would cave so fast. The question now is whether a Republican Senator will do the same. After all, Boehner's vote really doesn't matter. We could still see all 41 Republican Senators vote against such a middle-class-tax-cut only package (as there are basically no endangered Republican incumbents in the Senate in 2010). But now that Boehner supports it, that should give Snowe/Collins/etc. cover to do so.

This is REALLY good news - if it happens.
I bet they are just stalling, trying to find an excuse that will fly better with the public.

Pelosi, Reid, et al had better jump on this before Boehner & co find their better excuse.

1. Boner doesn't like being the focus of Obama's speeches?
My, my.

Maybe the Dems should rush that little jewel into an ad, in the event people missed it. That way, he won't be in such a hurry to say that statement was a joke. Then, Obama could hammer on the fact he's still in favor of keeping the tax cut for his wealthy friends...where the real money is.

2. The Rethugs are always ready to "espouse" Democratic ideas...

just long enough to get them elected and in power, then "pop goes the weasel".

They then govern just like they always have, without the least intent of forwarding progressive ideals. They do this on purpose and that's why Boehner is saying all this now. He knows it will help get all the Reprobates elected, that's all. :puke:

Obviously, no such thing will happen between now and November, but it sure could sway a lot of "independents" if they're foolish enough to believe this orange snake oil salesman.

3. As usual, the problem is the Senate, not the House.
