Edited on Sun Sep-12-10 09:48 PM by edbermac
HYANNIS, Mass. — Actor Kevin McCarthy, who played the frantic doctor trying to save his friends and neighbors in the science-fiction movie classic "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," has died at age 96.

McCarthy died Saturday, said Cape Cod Hospital spokesman Dave Riley, who wouldn’t reveal the cause of death or any other details.

McCarthy’s acting career took off in 1938 with his Broadway debut in "Abe Lincoln in Illinois."

29. When I see it scheduled on tv, I always watch it too. It was brilliantly done.
Kevin was perfect for the role and he did a masterful job. Everything was so real.

BTW, while I was watching it (again) one afternoon in the Spring my Mother came in with the mail. She handed me a letter we both dreaded receiving. It was a draft notice and I was to report to the Army within a few weeks. I thought it was curious how I was watching 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' as my body was 'snatched' by the government. My Mom and I laughed about that many times later after I served my tour of duty...

7. He did a cameo in the 1978 remake:

"...the star of the original film, Kevin McCarthy, appears briefly as a man on the street frantically screaming about aliens ("They're here!"), in a shot reminiscent of one of the final shots of the original."

And his sister was Mary McCarthy, the author and committed leftist.

A good guy.

10. Milestone movie from the book penned in the middle of a paranoid America.
I first saw this movie on a black and white Raytheon television when I was around 10 years old in my room around midnight. Kevin McCarthy was brilliant in that film.

13. I'm very sorry to hear that he has passed on.
The classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers has been one of my favorite movies ever since I first saw it at the age of 10. I've watched it countless times and never get tired of watching it. It was one of my mother's favorite movies, too.

Kevin McCarthy also starred in the excellent first-season Twilight Zone episode "Long Live Walter Jameson," which was scripted by Charles Beaumont.

I remember him the best from UHF and Innerspace. Funny guy. I believe that he had a bit part in the Twilight Zone movie as well. I actually got to see him in a one-man play several years ago with him performing as Harry S. Truman. He will be missed. I had no idea how old he was!

18. He did have a bit part ...
... in the disappointing (in my opinion) Anthony segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie (which, incidentally, featured a camino appearance by Bill Mumy, who starred as the original Anthony Fremont in the superb Twilight Zone classic episode "It's a Good Life").

23. I didn't know until recently that his sister was leftist writer Mary McCarthy:
Kevin McCarthy, Mary McCarthy and two other brothers were orphaned when both parents died in the great flu epidemic of 1918. Interesting family history.

28. CatWoman, I love your pictures!
I took in four additional strays in the past two years so now I have five strays all of whom live inside. But I built a 'kitty cabana' outside (a huge cage) so they can go outside on the deck any time they want. They have the best of both worlds, but without the dangers of being outside cats.

27. That was the most chilling movie ever.
Kevin did a great acting job in that movie. It still sends chills down my spine when I think of some of the scenes. It's a masterpiece.

Rest in Peace Kevin...
