cross posted in Iowa and activist forum. I thought as many people as possible may want to see this.
Many of you may remember that I have been involved in an attempt to bring community radio stations to Iowa as the FCC allowed new, full-power FM stations to be licensed beginning later this year. Well it has been an eye-opener. We actually will have some folks moving forward in their attempt to actually go on the air. I do not want to go into minutiae of detail. Let me just say it ain't simple nor cheap. What I really want to bring to your attention is the RW Xian plan to grab every fricking available frequency. As reported by one of our group, they have been 'told by God to dominate the radio airwaves in America.' They will put in a application for anything that looks like a potential opening. Despite a new point system that is supposed to streamline awarding frequencies, the RW Xians plan to contest every area they lose in court. This could add years and thousands of wasted dollars to any true community group. Many of these groups will not have the wherewithal to stick it out. They have been able to tie up the last openings for nearly 15 years and may still tie up some of those for a while longer. It is almost enough to make me cry. Soon enough my beloved free over the air radio will be all Jesus Christ and Rush Limbaugh. I think the old USSR had more diversity.

1. Keep up the good fight. If they win and get all the air, no one important will listen. |

Time for a new technology I guess.
Radio is cool though.

a STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN. Their workforce is legion, their power is disgusting, and their goal is that of nightmares.

3. "The last openings" and then some! |

Technical note: a "translator station" is a low-power transmitter that repeats a station's main signal on another frequency so as to serve places within the station's service area that are hard to reach because of mountainous terrain or the like.
At least, that's what it's supposed to be. Lately, the fundies have been flooding the noncommercial FM band (88.1-91.9 MHz) with bogus "translators" fed by satellite. My favorite is the "Christian rock" outlet in Twin Falls, ID that has one of these "translators" here on O'ahu!! :wtf:
