so...what was the point of NAFTA again? |
|
Jobs here disappearing...maquiladoras south of the Rio Grande not enough to sustain workers in Mexico (big shocker there) so they naturally come here...worker rights and environmental protections shot to hell...tell me again why FTAs are such great ideas. Anyone?

The purpose was to help the Rich. Sodomizing the Middle Class was only an (obvious) byproduct.

10. Nafta was supposed to establish Trade Markets |
|
in which Mexico, Canada, some SAmerican countries would participate. It was to bring wealth and prosperity to all(sarcasm). You know a real boom.
However, they ignored Ricardo's basic rule --there must be comparative advantage. In other words when you put Mexico up against the US --no bais for comparison. GDP, Wages, whatever. Compare US to SA . It might take a few countries to even have the GDP of California. In other words, like many things Nafta was established on shaky weak not workable soil. Free Trades works great when there is comparative advantage.
In these situations, the poor people in other countries do not earn enough to buy our products. Products can be made very cheaply in those countries and shipped back to US. Not free trade. Surely not fair trade. The two or three companies should be trading products more evenly.
Our jobs got shipped to Mexico because the Transnationals could make ever so much money. But then just as Mexico began to jjust start to get up on its knees----That giant sucking sound swooshed in from China. Transnationals found people who earn even less. Mexico has been left in a Depression and we are seeing the results of Nafta in Immigration Problem.
To be fair I will concede thatTechnolgy has added to the Nafta Problem.
Do not get me started on Trade Policy.
