Chinese Ramen, Chinese Gluten and Human Kidney Problems
Edited on Thu May-17-07 09:38 PM by Wiley50
After wheat flour, gluten is the next ingredient (sometimes called wheat protein)

Most Ramen noodles are manufactured in China

Still doing basic research. Anyone want to help

My kidneys have been real sick lately

Being poor, I have been eating a lot of it

I've had to stop eating it

Sure would like to have what I have left analyzed

1. I took some of those little individual cans of peaches
out of my cabinet today, and saw "Product of China". 'Cuz no one in this country grows peaches, huh? I'll have to read labels more carefully!

24. Some ramen brands made in US by US companies
but the noodles they use in them come from China

They don't have to say on the package

26. But we've already established that ramen is bad for you, yes? Buy a box of spaghetti
instead, and you'll know EXACTLY where it was made. Add your own herbs & spices instead of a Mystery Packet of Flavoring, and you're golden.

32. spaghetti isn't high in saturated fat, either
Just reading the nutrition label on a packet of ramen will raise your LDL cholesterol level.

Whereas aglio e olio--spaghetti with olive oil and garlic--will probably help bring bad cholesterol levels down, especially if the spaghetti's whole wheat.

Ramen's yummy and cheap, so it really is a shame that it's so unhealthy.

20. lOOK AT THIS QUOTE FROM LINK BELOW
Experts say China would like to close the door on the episode. And so would America’s biggest food companies like Kraft, which is supporting an organization that is pushing to strengthen the F.D.A.

In a statement issued this week, Kraft Foods said, “We’re also lending our support to the Coalition for a Stronger F.D.A. and industry colleagues in urging Congress for substantial funding increases to the F.D.A. for the agency’s food oversight functions.”

Lax FDA allows us to be food guinea pigs (melamine, cyanuric acid, etc +industrial cheese)

7. The flavor packet is where the gluten likely is
Edited on Thu May-17-07 09:50 PM by Warpy
and not all packs of ramen are Chinese. There are some made in Japan and even Mexico. I have to admit a particular fondness for Enchiloso lime and chile flavor. I don't eat it often, just as a once in a blue moon treat.

From Wiki: "Most ramen noodles are made from four basic ingredients: wheat flour, salt, water, and kansui (かんすい) which is essentially a type of mineral water, containing sodium carbonate and usually potassium carbonate, as well as sometimes a small amount of phosphoric acid."

Personally, I'd advise a beans and rice diet over a ramen one. It's just as cheap, or cheaper, and gives you a decent amount of protein, fibre, and other nutrients instead of empty calories swimming in broth of questionable origin.

Woops, here's the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramen

11. Yes, you're right. Beans and rice are MUCH better nutritionally. Besides which, microwaving ANYTHING
in a Styrofoam cup is a REALLY bad idea, healthwise.

19. It's not REFINED gluten
it's WHEAT FLOUR. Gluten is part of WHEAT.

The REFINED gluten is in the flavor packet. DO look at the recipe from Wiki.

12. Uh oh. Ramen, Cup of Soup..omg!
I thought America was one of the world's foremost food producers. I've begun looking at food labels. Even tho it says manufactured in the US, the food is from somewhere else. I love mandarin oranges cups and even Dole and Del Monte say 'product of Thailand.' The walmart brand says product of China. Who is eating the food produces by the US?

15. mine says 'made in USA'
wheat protein is the 4th ingredient of the seasoning mix, after salt, monosodium glutamate, hydrolyzed soy, then corn and wheat protein. These are from Aldis though, instead of the other I normally get at Wal-mart.
