OK-evaluate my latest ltte-tax bills,war and unemployment
Edited on Mon Sep-13-10 11:09 PM by w8liftinglady
Please evaluate for spelling, grammar and content before I publish....Thanks.

I have read with sad curiosity comments by elected officials on renewal of the Tax Relief Bills of 2001 and 2003.Before making a decision on this,we-as those the elected officials supposedly represent-must educate ourselves on the circumstances and results.

The Tax Cut of 2001 (Economic Growth and Tax Reconciliation Act) was intended to relieve the Recession of 2001 by stimulating spending and encouraging saving. It favored largely those making over $200,000/year,and resulted in a $1.75 trillion dollar tax cut.Shortly after passage, the tragedy of 09/11 occurred, and the needs of the nation dramatically changed.Wars were declared in Iraq and Afghanistan. At that point, the bill should have been repealed.Instead,The Tax Relief Bill of 2003 was passed, again favoring those making over $200,000/year.It was estimated to be a $500 billion dollar tax cut.

To date, the cost of War in Iraq and Afghanistan has been $1.079 trillion dollars. This does not count the Veterans Administration costs. The War in Afghanistan is escalating, and the "war" in Iraq has stabilized with "only" 50,000 troops assigned. It's not all bad news, though.Corporations are making a killing(no pun intended) thanks to our troops.

Since 2001,the U.S. has lost 5.5 million manufacturing jobs. Since 2001, over 42,400 factories have closed in the U.S., and another 90,000 are considered at severe risk of closing. The reason behind this is drastically increased outsourcing of American jobs to other countries.More and more "white-collar" employees are beginning to see their jobs outsourced as well.At the same time,CEOs of these same companies have seen their salaries rise and tax rates lower.

These are two examples of how the "Tax Cuts" have benefited Americans.98 per cent of Americans are in dire straits. Two per cent of Americans are doing great. As we enter a new decade of war,do you want to see reduced Tax breaks for the top two percent continue? As employment worsens,do you want to see America devolve into a Third-World nation?Support continuation of these tax breaks, and you may take credit for the unraveling of America as we knew it.Thanks a lot.

1. Those in power are serving the two percenters.
They truely are masters of entitlement.

2. I like it.

In a future letter, you might want to appeal to seniors of either party with something along the lines of:

Those taxes would have paid for our social security and our country's security. Now we are being told that our social security needs are not as important as tax breaks for the rich, that their expensive homes are more important than food, heat, or even medical care for those who can no longer work. At least a third of us now or will soon depend only on social security, with no pensions to help, partly because the wealthy have moved our jobs overseas. I cannot imagine any decent person would want to take more income from those who have so little, their neighbors.

You could make the wealthy sound separate and entitled by spatting yourself from them a bit more. Instead of using terms like ".98 per cent of Americans are in dire straits. Two per cent of Americans are doing great". Maybe something like

People like me, the 98 percent of Americans who have to work for a living, are hurting. The wealthy and privileged, the 2 percent that have over a third of all the wealth in the country, are doing fine. Surely they cannot ask us to pay more of our income into tax breaks they barely even feel?

just ideas, however - I'm sure less than 2 cents worth -

But your letter as it sits is fine.

:hi:

The second sentence makes no sense to me.

Add a space after every punctuation mark (I've been meaning to ask you about this for a long time, but did not want to be critical for no reason. It seems most of your posts lack spaces after punctuation marks. I didn't know if it was your style or something wrong with your computer).

Check capitalization (i.e. "The" in the 2nd paragraph, 5th sentence).

3rd paragraph: "The War in Afghanistan is escalating, and the "war" in Iraq has stabilized with "only" 50,000 troops assigned." - I assume you want to give an impression of sarcasm. Instead, re-write the sentence to be clear, making the criticism direct.

3rd paragraph, last sentence suggestion: "However, it's not all bad news for large corporations that are making a killing (no pun intended) by taking advantage of our troops."

4th paragraph, last word: "lowered"

5th paragraph, 1st sentence suggestion: "How have the tax cuts benefitted America?"

5th paragraph, 2nd sentence: "percent"

5th paragraph, 2nd sentence suggestion: "Ninety-eight percent of Americans are in dire straits, while two percent of Americans are doing great."

5th paragraph, 3rd and 4th sentence suggestions: "As we enter a new decade of war, do you, the average American taxpayer struggling to make ends meet, want to see reduced tax breaks for the top two percent to continue? Do you want to see America devolve into a third-world nation?"

5th paragraph, last sentence: "Support a continuation of these tax breaks, and you may take credit for the unraveling of America as we knew it. Thanks a lot"

You might work on the last sentence a little more.

edited for punctuation :D
