New Survey Reveals Why Jon Stewart is the Biggest Long Term Threat to Fox News
The newest Pew Research Center’s survey of where and how people get their news has been released, and while Fox News is still polling the oldest viewership, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart are pulling the youngest. As Stewart educates his young viewers in the ways of FNC on a nightly basis, it is clear that he is the biggest long term media threat to Fox News.

The good news is that digital media is causing people to spend more time each day with the news. According to the Pew Research Center for People and the Press survey of where and how people get their news, "The net impact of digital platforms supplementing traditional sources is that Americans are spending more time with the news than was the case a decade ago. As was the case in 2000, people now say they spend 57 minutes on average getting the news from TV, radio or newspapers on a given day. But today, they also spend an additional 13 minutes getting news online, increasing the total time spent with the news to 70 minutes. This is one of the highest totals on this measure since the mid-1990s and it does not take into account time spent getting news on cell phones or other digital devices."

Newspapers are still struggling and have only partially been able to make up for the decline in print readership on the Internet. Print newspaper readership has declined from 38% in 2006 to 24% today. Online newspaper readership has grown from 9% in 2006 to 17% today. When the totals are combined 37% of Americans said that they got their news from a newspaper, which puts the industry on par with the radio and the Internet, but way behind television.

Speaking of television, Fox News has been able to hold its audience share because Republicans have been fleeing to the network. In 2002, Republicans were just as likely to watch CNN as they were to watch Fox News, but eight years later, 40% of all Republicans regularly watch FNC. Twelve percent of Republicans watch CNN and 6% watch MSNBC. Fox News does not lead the cable news ratings because there are more Republicans in the United States. They lead because they have been successful in consolidating the Republican audience.

<snip>

Fox News has made no secret of their distaste for Colbert, and especially Jon Stewart, and it is pretty obvious why. Colbert and Stewart are educating an entire generation of younger viewers to critically think about what they see in the media. The long term health of Fox News is going to depend on their ability to attract and retain younger viewers. These are the same viewers that are watching Jon Stewart expose and mock Fox News on a nightly basis. This is why FNC goes out of its way to impugn the credibility of Stewart anytime they can. It is funny to think that the competition that may do the most long term damage to Fox News is not Keith Olbermann or Rachel Maddow, but a comedian who hosts a nightly mock newscast on a comedy network.

34. I remember reading here on DU some time ago about an
agreement that Fox has with certain entities (businesses, waiting rooms, etc., I guess) that they'll provide the TV set if they keep it on Fox.

I don't have a link, & can't verify whether it's true or not, but maybe someone here knows.

If true, that prob is what hikes up their ratings.

I'm an old lady, & I watch The Daily Show & Colbert.

I imagine Fox is this current oldster's version of the olden day oldster's Lawrence Welk. But at least Lawrence Welk shows up on PBS from time to time.

No TV in the house.
And that's true for a lot of the youngsters.
So Stewart is probably reaching a much larger audience than the ratings show.

I'm amused that Fux noise does not fire back at those two except I think they realize that they'd be up against modern masters of satire and only publicizing them further while providing them with more fodder.Stewart especially roasts their chestnuts quite nicely on occasion.

I still like 'Okie' but now for it's historical context ( and a great country song). It was a dividing line back in the day. " We still fly Old Glory down by the Courthouse" meaning the dirty hippies didn't. This dirty hippie was a bit more complex.

"Asshole From El Paso" was Kinky's response.

We don't have no love in's in El Paso

We don't go to porno picture shows

We don't swap our wives with our neighbors

And we keep our kids away from Mexico.

And I'm proud to be an asshole from El Paso

A place where sweet young virgins are deflowered.

You walk down the street knee-deep in tacos

Ta-ta-ta-tacos

And the wetbacks still get twenty cents an hour.

We don't wipe our asses on Old Glory,

God and Lone Star beer are things we trust.

We keep our women virgins till they're married

So hosin' sheep is good enough for us.

31. Not only that...
But Stewart and Colbert give a new show every night. Usually new topics, fresh interviews, and htey do so in an entertaining manner.

By contrast Fox (and everyone else) parrots the same five news stories all day, then the next day moves to the next five. it always relies o nthe same roster of "experts" and it tries hard to look "balanced" by wringing out and throwing away any entertainment value.

I contend that comedian, Senator Al Franken, exemplifies critical thinking and civic virtue, too. I've heard it said that comedians are some of the smartest folks among us. I don't know how that claim could be substantiated but I do think that comedians Colbert, Stewart, and Franken are very intelligent.

"Critical Thinking, I imagine, is not high on the No Child Left Behind crowd..." No kidding.

"...but I’ll tell you what they don’t want . . . they don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that . . . that doesn’t help them. That’s against their interests. That’s right. They don’t want people who are smart enough to sit around a kitchen table and think about how badly they’re getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fuckin' years ago. They don’t want that. You know what they want? They want obedient workers . . . Obedient workers, people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork. And just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shittier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it,..."

...featured this particular rant, my jaw almost hit the floor. Not that he was saying, but saying it so damned pointedly and pulling no punches.

The America that most believe we live in is a cobbled-together collection of Amerimyths and Amerimemes designed to limit our honest analytical analysis of the world around us, specifically our government and the actions perpetrated in our names. As Carlin said, "...there is a big club, and you and I ain't in the big club." No truer words. A very small amount of persons control most of the wealth of this country, and further control most of the mechanisms of American government. And much of their machinations are not in the best interests of the Republic nor those of its citizens. We are being fed upon by a parasitical "upper class," and they have no concern or care for our needs or desires. In fact, they dangle basic needs like health care and old-age security in front of our faces like so many carrots and use a variety of methods to manipulate our desires to their best advantages.

13. I loved the Team Jesus, Team Mohammed thing
they are doing now. It tears down this whole Islam bashing thing by showing how Christians are pretty much the same as Moslems in ideology. Last night was on the end times. Team Jesus talked about going to Heaven, harps, angels, TIVO and Team Mohammed said he was going to get laid a lot. Then they made a pact that at the last moment, one would make an instant conversion to the religion that turned out to be the real one, and they would go to Heaven together.

53. It wasn't always that way, was it?
I recall a time when the term "old" was more indicative of "wise" in the sense that getting older allowed more opportunity for experience. For those of us who remember growing up with outdoor toilets, the advent of indoor running water was a modern luxury.

I think that two things, at least, have transpired to make young people think of us old folks as "stupid": !) It seems that many older people (self included) find it difficult to acquire the ability to use articles of new technology so rapidly as young folks do; and, 2) the rate of introduction and the complexity of device of modern technology seems to be growing rapidly, Though I and most of my peers could work on a flat-head Ford engine when we were young, the complexity of my Toyota pickup engine precludes my attempting to do anything to it. I think that my generation could master the intricacies of VCRs, cell phones, iPads and other devices if we had time to do so. And the benefit of a younger brain would certainly help in that regard. But that is not the case ~ we'll just have to accept being considered "stupid".

55. Going into a Best Buy is kind of fun.
The geeks start hovering around, ready to simplify their explanations of the technology and all. I took my first programming course (FORTRAN) in about 1964 & spent a good part of the next 20 years teaching & doing psych research, running various statistics packages on mainframes. I learned BASIC in about 1980, bought my first personal computer (an Osborne with its magnificent 5" CRT) in about 1982, and have been lugging various machines around ever since. I stopped tracking the technology closely after the first Pentiums came out, and about 3 years ago I simplified my life by switching to a Macbook.

I have no clue how to operate our TV, though.

Great quote from the article, and great work by Jon and Stephen.

35. I find a few older that 60 friends that watch Stewart & Colbert regularly ....
could you imagine if they added more time to each show. The older folks watch him in the daytime/afternoon re-run slot. If they changed the time slot they could kill Faux.

Says it's the best place to actually GET news w/o spin to it.

That and it's funny as hell.

Mind you my parents raised me listening to the two ronnies, Monty python and Bill Cosby (on record no less)
Oh and the capitol steps!

So this really should be no surprise to me.

district. There's no way I can stay up 'til midnight to catch Jon & Stephen live. I watch the next day on the internet too.

36. i don't usually watch jon stewart and colbert at 11pm.... i usually
catch a repeat at 10am or 2pm the next day. failing that i will go online and watch it. i prefer to watch it on the tv, but those shows give sanity to the insanity. i don't know what i'd do without them. and i am not young anymore i guess. 37 (for two more weeks). i know that i have family that for some reason hate those shows. they are my humor... and they equally go after both parties making them more credible.

didn't faux news try to do a half hour mimic show of stewart?

and now they have a close bond with the extremism as does the entire GOP. They ate an ostrich sized crow last night given the results in the primaries.

I have other friends of my generation who also watch regularly. Seriously, I do not know the channel number for Fox News. When I occasionally channel search and land on Fox News I keep moving. I will confess to watching Fox Soccer channel. I hope that does not make me a traitor.

Middle of the night she tries to tune in but The Daily Show was Tivo-ing and she couldn't figure out how to get around it. Too funny. Next morning she went off on us like a bullet, professing that we watch Christian hating TV in our home. This is so exhausting.

58. My inlaws tried that once....ONCE!
My wife and I refuse to allow their brand of fundie nonsense anywhere near our children, so there has been tremendous stress in her relationship to her father (divorced and re-married before "finding" Jeebus, of course) and step-mother - of course, I am to blame being one of those godless heathen atheists, but I assign no value to their opinion and do not care.

They are also followers of Beck and the rest of clown college and wanted to watch on one of their mercifully infrequent visits. I knew that they had zero technical savvy, so I set the TV up to run on a personal channel list and intentionally deleted Fox News, Fox Business and all of the church channels. Now that's quality viewing experience...not the actual TV, just the watching them scan up and down the channel list looking in vain for their hero and getting pissed off about it not being there.

I WISH that had the foresight to act dumb and say something like this:
"gee...I thought we got that channel, but I so rarely watch that nonsense that I guess it must have been clips I saw on Stewart...now THAT'S good stuff, did you guys see the one where Jon Stewart showed how Glenn Beck is insane and used the blackboard to prove it? Oh, here I think I saved the TiVo version..."

61. I feel you r pain.
This is the opening sentence to my mothers' email regarding the subject. 'The fact that you locked out a conservative network on your personal computers ( she means TV's) is indeed your prerogative. Just as it is my Constitutional right to be a staunch, informed Conservative.' It got worse from there and life is not fun when we have to deal with her.

51. "Laughter is the best medicine"
and Stewart and Colbert are great cures for Reich Wing propaganda. They only fall flat on their faces when they try to mock Rachel Maddow, who is very thorough with her facts. She's not infallible, but unlike Faux News, she has the humbleness to correct herself when she is wrong.

major news sources than Democrats. The one exception is Fox News, which twice as many Republicans believe all or most of (41%) than Democrats (21%)."

Kind of interesting. Republicans trust the network most likely to lie.

65. I think our youth will prevail
This is a great thread. It brought back memories for me. I am an American born but Canadian by choice.

Through reading the comments on this tread I found the link to the video of Jon Stewart on Crossfire when Kerry and Bush were running....awesome episode and remembered how my jaw dropped as I watched him seriously analyze the hosts and their show....LOL. Shortly after this episode the show folded....\I think he was like Dorothy pulling the curtain open and showing us all that the hosts were not the wizards we thought they were.

I love Colbert and think he had guts to do the DC press dinner. It was wicked! It was awesome. I think that is when the republicans realized he wasn't a real republican....LOL. He mocks O'Reilly so well.

I was a refugee when I came to Canada in 1969...so you can figure out that I am in the age minority of Colbert and Stewart's viewers. I do believe that humor can make a dent and educate people...and the young do ask questions and Stewart and Colbert do bring up these questions and pull the curtains to expose the truth....something that FOX news hates....

any way they can -

RATINGS!!

Are the only way to stop republican Fox lies & underhanded tactics is to watch Stewart (and Colbert) record their shows on DVR (Tivo, DVR also count in the ratings).

68. Two observations:
First, older conservatives watch Fox News because it's the only place left where they can find their worldview validated - without reality intruding.

Second, why do you think Republicans go to so much effort to suppress the youth vote, as well as the minority vote?
