Lady Gaga, Harry Reid Tweet Over Don't Ask Don't Tell
"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and pop sensation Lady Gaga exchanged tweets today over a pending Senate vote to repeal the military’s controversial Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy.

“Gay Veterans were my VMA dates. Repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell. CALL HARRY REID to Schedule Senate Vote,” Lady Gaga tweeted. She included a photo of herself with military service members discharged under DADT who joined her at the MTV awards show Sunday night.

Gaga, whose 7 million followers on Twitter make her the most popular user, also made a personal appeal to her fans this week, urging them to call Reid in an interview with talk show host Ellen Degeneres that aired Monday.

Reid announced yesterday afternoon that he is planning to move on to the 2011 defense authorization bill – which would include a repeal provision – once the Senate clears the small business measure later this week.

Apparently Lady Gaga didn’t get the memo.

Tweeted Reid, “There is a vote on #DADT next week. Anyone qualified to serve this country should be allowed to do so.”

This afternoon Gaga replied, “God Bless and Thank you @HarryReid, from all of us, like u, who believe in equality and the dream of this country. We were #BORNTHISWAY.”

To which the Senate Majority Leader said, “@ladygaga It's the right thing to do. Come back to Vegas soon! #nvsen #DADT”

1. Lady GaGa picked the right target.
She's showing more political savvy than a lot of national organizations and pundits who seem to think Obama is the only elected official in America. Amazing.

2. I'm gaga for Gaga, and don't mind saying so.
She's going to be one of the best advocates for gays we've seen. Equality for gays is long overdue, and her prominent role is putting more nails in the coffin of homophobia. She's mobilizing a generation of young people to stand up for gay rights and be proud of doing so.
