Poll question: Which way were you raised? |
|
Growing up, was your family more Authoritarian, Authoritative, Facilitative or Laissez-Faire?
Authoritarian: What the parent(s) says goes. Strict adherence to rules and discipline.
Authoritative: Firm, but fair and consistent. Children gradually gain more privledges & responsibilities.
Facilitative: Children empowered to lead their own decisions. Parents role to gently guide children and ensure their well-being.
Laissez-Faire: Children guide the decision making. Natural consequences of behavior (good and bad) trump parent influence.

Authoritarian/Laissez-Faire.
Pretty much ignored, but when Dad stopped ignoring us, watch out.

2. It'd be interesting to also ask which you think is the right way |
|
I am guessing few would vote for Authoritarian or Laissez Faire, but how many would vote for Facilitative over Authoritative?

4. Authoritative as a small child, very gradually transitioned to Facilitative |
|
as I became a teen and grew older. I believe my childhood and upbringing was very nearly as close to ideal as two non-fictional parents could achieve.

5. Authoritarian and abusive |
|
But I have tried to raise my kids with a good combination of Authoritative/Facilitative.
No having to earn love or approval but strict rules that teach them a strong work ethic and personal safety. And work hard play hard.

6. Many people aren't raised just one way |
|
I was raised by grandparents, and a mother and stepfather. Each 'pair' had a different approach, even each person. Life isn't as simple as the poll makes out.

Me and my siblings were sorta like birds at a garden bird feeder. Usually there was food at the table; if there wasn't we found our own.
Rules were simple like "Don't burn down the house, don't kill or maim others. If you punch a hole in the wall, you have to fix it."
It was an autistic spectrum anarchy. Nobody guided any "decision making" and there were no "natural consequences." Stuff just happened. It was all as random as the weather.

But then again...that was the only way all the kids grew up..from where i come from. So i really didn't notice till later :)
and yeah...teachers also had the right to cane students:P...basically a 1940s era British model of schooling that survives to this day.

My mom is wheelchair bound/borderline paralyzed so I spent my childhood taking care of her and myself. It's just how the cards fell.
