Shepherd Express (Milwaukee)Jeff White has taken on something of a crusade: standing outside an East Side CVS/pharmacy to protest its refusal to carry the Shepherd Express.
CVS, a Rhode Island corporation, recently purchased Osco Drug, which had provided the Shepherd to its customers for years. Shortly after the CVS acquisition, the Shepherd delivery person was told to remove the Shepherd rack from the CVS stores.
So for the past five weeks, White, a free-lance journalist who has no affiliation with the Shepherd, has spent about 20 hours a week standing on the corner of Brady and Farwell while holding a sign saying "CVS: Where is the Shepherd Express?"
... But that friendly relationship changed on May 9, when White was handcuffed, arrested, charged with "loitering and prowling" and given a $160 ticket by different police officers.
... Shepherd publisher Louis Fortis said he repeatedly called the Rhode Island headquarters to determine why CVS changed its policy, but did not receive a response. Fortis heard from other sources that a customer in Wauwatosa complained about the Shepherd's criticism of President Bush and the war in Iraq and demanded that the paper be pulled from the store.
