6. Oh, I agree with that. |
|
But Republican moderates might think that, given the choice between a Republican they vaguely disagree with and a Democrat they vaguely agree with, the "R" behind his name is the most persuasive thing. Arlen Specter was someone they were very familiar with, so with him, it was more about HIM than his party affiliation. But two "new" candidates? That's when party loyalty could become the deciding factor. The other Pubbies probably pressured them and berated them to be "loyal", even though Toomey doesn't necessarily represent their views. You know, kinda like how we uber-liberals are firmly expected to vote for Dems who don't really represent OUR views. If it happens on our side, why are we shocked that it could be happening on theirs?

I'm from PA.
Most of us are "apathetic". (Read: grumpy AND lazy.)
We forget that's how Rick Santorum won ... and Toomey is worse.

He built a system that could get out the vote quite effectively.

|
Sestak evidently does not acknowledge Rendell's greatness enough.
Sestak has ALWAYS come from behind in the polls - he trailed Specter till the last week or so, won every county but 3 in PA.
Toomey is trying to sell himself as a moderate to the moderates and a RWer to the RWers. He is a real corporate shit and has no business in the Senate.

22. That's quite over-blown -- a non-feud |
|
Consider the source: The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Ed Rendell squabbles with everyone. A week later, he's their bestest buddy in the world. That's how Ed is. Joe Sestak is very nearly as intense, and in much the same way.
The "Rendell Machine" actually IS coming out for Sestak. So is the Republican Machine, and it's carpeted most of Bucks County with Toomey signage. (I can't speak for other areas -- I seldom go outside Bucks and Philadelphia.)
Right now, it's still activist apathy. I've been having trouble even tracking down local Obama campaigners. BUT ... I think that will change.
And Philly is a "big Gay town". If DADT goes down over the next month, the community's anger over Obama will evaporate and they'll put their full weight behind Sestak -- who, with Pat Murphy, is a strong anti-DADT, pro-LGBTIQ rights Democrat, and 100% military.
But we're cutting it MIGHTY close.

I've been phone banking for Sestak... getting a significant minority of registered Democrats saying that they don't do politics anymore... senior citizens during the day are the demographic that are turned off.

9. PA is a swing state, and this year the wind is blowing in the GOP direction |
|
The governorship in PA usually switches back and forth between the parties every eight years, and PA voters tend to send Republicans to the Senate.

14. These are the factors that I am weighing in on here..and they tend to stick |
|
especially in this state, unless something goes horribly wrong, but it's quite a simple formula....the larger cities ( Philly, Pittsburgh ) more heavily-populated areas have always been and ( so far as I can tell ) always will swing heavily Democratic...wayyy more votes in these areas. To me, it's all about population density per square mile. This holds true with Central, Central Northern P.A which is traditionally red,( the dreaded T-area ) but even those areas put out some surprises in numbers this past presidential election.
I live in Lower Bucks...a heavily Democratic section of Bucks County which, the farther north you go into Bucks County the more it tends to go Republican, shit, come to think of it there is an impressive Repub population in Levittown-Middletown townships...and yet, you reach the more eclectic boroughs like New Hope, Doylestown, that will lean Democratic without fail. I guess the point I'm trying to make is lots of people put too much attention on the whole Pennsyltucky influence when it comes to elections, but when the numbers come in they are just outmatched.

18. Newtown has a hefty collection of Teabaggers |
|
Yardley, Doylestown, and Newtown are the swing areas of the county. Newtown will be hard for the Democrats to hold. It tipped Dem starting with the beginning of the Bush debacle in 2006. Went Dem with Obama in 08.

Edited on Thu Sep-16-10 12:07 AM by TK421
I'm not saying I know everyone from these areas, but I do know quite a few and hear plenty of what goes around....almost everything is word of mouth in communities like these.
This could go either way..but in P.A it always seems to depend on the mood of our residents..whether they're pissed off enough about a certain issue or not. You gotta love it either way....but one thing these people are, they are loyal once they set their mind to a vote

Most people don't know what a fucking asshole he is. He'll screw everyone, not just in PA, but in the entire country. They could tattoo "Dickhead" on his wrinkled forehead and the Republicans will still vote for him.

|
There was NO anti-Sestak activity whatsoever.
If there are any hard feelings, they're being well-hidden.
The press tried to turn it into a big scandal, but it wasn't. I can't say I know every Democrat in the area, but I know quite a few, and no one is, or ever WAS, pissed-off over this. Obama promised to back Specter, which he did. Sestak won. Now Obama and Specter are both backing Sestak.

He supports card check, wants to reinstate the assault weapons ban (when oh when will Democrats stop committing electoral suicide over the gun control issue?), and supports medical marijuana. Specter did not support card check, opposed most gun control, and did not support medical marijuana. Just to pick three kind of hot-button issues at random.

29. 'Democrat wins attorney general post' |
|
--Banner headline from Pgh. Post-Gazette, Nov. 3, '04. Sub headline says 'Eisenhower beats Shaler's Corbett', in a Bill Toland article on p. A-30. Jim Eisenhower got 2,103,119 votes to Tom Corbett's 2,016,640 votes, with 53 k to Green party candidate Marakay Rogers.
"The streak is over. Philadelphia Democrat Jim Eisenhower, a former prosecutor with the U.S. Justice Department, defeated Shaler's Tom Corbett in a contest for the attorney general's office last night. Eisenhower and Democrats had been hoping to end the Republican Party's 24-year grip on the state's top crime-fighting post. Not since 1980, when the attorney general's office became an elected job, had Democrats won the spot..."
After Corbett stole the election, he decided to go after 'corruption' in government, by investigating ONLY PA State House Democrats. It was really surprising to see a repug attorney general engage in selective political prosecution, because they're usually such bastions of judicial integrity.

That will bring a rush of wavering older folks to Sestak's side.
All Democrats should do this. The hell with the Catfood Commission.
