Should have been higher, but I misread a couple of questions (it doesn't allow you to change your response). On edit: response to my first response, oversight on my part. 8. Some of the questions are too ambiguous |
|
Example:
"The primary responsibility of corporations is to produce profits and returns for their shareholders, not to improve society"
I actually 'Strongly Agree' with this statement, but with a qualifier. As the CEO of a company (and arguably any employee) it is your JOB to make the company money. Companies aren't inherently evil, they exist to make money.
However; it's the government's job to regulate them and to protect the American consumer, the American worker and the American economy. There are many questions that force you to choose between government and private industry. In my view they go hand and hand.

87. you arent the only one i saw on the thread. i believe corps have a societal responsibility though |
|
and not for progressive reasons, but from a more conservative, business perspective. a duty. an obligation. and ultimately, for selfish reason cause the healthier the society, the better they will do, which will bottomline be taking care of their interest.

190. Companies have an obligation to their clients, not their shareholders imho |
|
the share holders will get there's but a company should work hardest, first, to take care for it's clients who are giving them money for goods or services in the first place.
I think that's what's really broken our economy more than anything. companies forgetting who their loyalties belong to.

189. yes, that was a terrible question |
|
I strongly agreed as well, not because I think it should be the sole focus of corporations but because the question is one of legal fact, not my preference. "The primary responsibility of corporations is to produce profits and returns for their shareholders, not to improve society" is simply a true statement about the primary responsibility of a corporation - it's certainly not to "improve society." They are profit-making engines.
A far better statement would have been something like, "The primary responsibility of corporations should be to produce profits and returns for their shareholders balanced with concern for the welfare of society." This might actually measure "progressive" sentiment rather than testing the ability to ignore the facts for the sake of scoring more progressive on the survey.

157. I have an issue with that |
|
Putting both violence and sex in the same question forces a person to take the question as a whole, and not on the actual problems individually.
For example, I think there is WAY too much violence on TV and in films, and that I believe it has negatively impacted our society.
I think that making sex as verboten as they have, OTOH, is deleterious, because it's only frank and open discussion of sex that allows us to be much less uptight, and can strengthen our society. I don't believe one bit that there is "too much" sex available to viewers of television, and in film, it's usually lewd and lascivious more than it is natural sex.
I would gladly trade the violence for sex, anytime. Kids become inured to the difference with "fantasy" violence and real violence, and until we can find a way to show kids that with real violence, somebody doesn't get up and walk around after they've been killed.

199. I don't think there's much difference between our views. |
|
The underlying problem is violence. The problem is complicated by the fact that sexuality is depicted as laced with violence. I'm told that a lot of internet porn portrays sadomasochistic or mock-rape sex, and I believe that real harm comes from conflating the two. I have no problem with sexuality or its depiction per se, just with depictions that tangle it up with pain and humiliation or with the exploitation of children.

I got a 369, but there are a couple of trick questions in there. The one about corporations having a responsibility to society. If you are a progressive, I suppose you are supposed to say yes, but that is not the current reality. Corporations' ONLY responsibility is to maximize shareholder value; if progressives want it to be otherwise, they have to change the reality of how corporations are chartered first.

The primary responsibility of corporations is to produce profits and returns for their shareholders, not to improve society.
This IS true. The corporation as an institution does nothing other than produce profit. Anything it does that seems secondary to producing profit is only done to increase goodwill and thus produce a larger profit. The sooner we as a nation realize the poisonous nature of this institution, the better.
The Federal government should guarantee affordable health coverage for every American.
No. The Federal government should guarantee FREE health coverage for every American.
Americans should adopt a more sustainable lifestyle by conserving energy and consuming fewer goods
Yes, because wastefulness is stupid. However, this will not solve any problems. Any gains in efficiency will be swiftly eaten by increases in the population.

315. do you have that bumper sticker: |
|
End World Hunger. Eat the Rich.
I love it. I got into it w/ a dude who had a bumper sticker 'Extremely Rightwing.' I was behind him when he looked into his side mirror and I mouthed, 'Asshole.' He gave me the finger...I gave it back. Light turns green, he sits there. I lay on the horn....and I was all ready for him when he slammed on the brakes...hard. His poor Jeep rattled and some ugly crap came out of the tailpipe.
He also had a sticker: I support the troops, especially our snipers.
He was a young guy....looked like a nazi, actually.

does that truly make us the fringe left on DU?
I've always thought the people here very reasonable, and thoughtful.
And I HAVE known some people that do fall off the chart (as do i on my bad days)
is the us so skewed to the right that moderates (I consider myself moderate, not very liberal) are considered leftists gorillas now?
very interesting window into what the official punditocracy sees as "moderate" and "progressive" now a days.

It said I am 'very progressive and the average score for Americans is 209.
I didn't want to vote 0s and 10s because they seemed so extreme. So, on many questions i was voting 1s and 2s and 8s and 9s, with a couple of 5s for questions which seemed ill defined.

many people here are proud of their extremism though. A score of 350 or greater makes an average of 8.75 which means the person is voting 0,1 or 9,10 for most answers with a few 8s thrown in.

So in order to take those into account, I too picked a lot of twos, threes, seven and eights. Even 1 and 9 seemed a bit much on some of them. I dunno, maybe I need to simplify how I view things?

I do hold pretty progressive views, but I'm worried I'm too high on the chart. It seems to me that that kind of a score could set a person up for disappointment every time, since most congressional office holders, as well as the executive branch, are not that far to the left.
I've pictured myself holding the kind of views as Hillary, so I amm further to the left than this administration in many ways.

Many of the questions, however, are too vaguely worded. What am I to make, for instance, of "Government regulation does more harm than good"? Do I acknowledge that weak, unenforced regulations allow for terrible abuses, or go with my general feeling that one of government's duties is to regulate to prevent harm? I went with the latter.

Also, there's a question; "Corporations primary responsibility is to produce profit, not improve society."
That's absolutely true. It is government's job to oversee their activities and repeal their charter if they do not serve a public interest. Each corporation should exist at the suffrage of the people.

|
several questions were pretty um... yeah (as discussed upthread)
While I love these threads just so i don't feel quite so out there (or alone), I also think that polls like this are designed to push a certain meme.
at the end of the say, all it does is scare people who score more than 200.
But I think the majority of the country is closer to my score (317) than 200 or below.
It's all about phrasing.
And those questions felt rather conservative in origin.

278. so i just took it again. as conservative as i knew how. somewhere i didnt answer right, BUT |
|
i got 20/400
extremely conservative. average person 209.6
so, that tells me they are not just adding the numbers we hit cause i had to hit quite a few 10 to be conservative. they were switching the conserv/liberal questions around. and they used same definition as with conservative. and.... if the average is 209.6 then that tells us anyway, by a small number, people lean liberal....
living in a mass of red though... i dont know how the rest of the world feels, lol.

Good quiz. Although the company question was strange as discussed above. Corporations have a legal obligation to maximise profits for their shareholders, some may choose to do otherwise but even then there is often a profit motive not too far behind.

Interesting threads would be for DUers to use the same test based upon what they perceive as current US policy, teabaggerism, Obama, GOP, Palin, Dean, etc.

The problem is, a lot of these questions are predicated on assumptions I don't share.
I have yet to meet anyone more "liberal" than I am in real life. I am not a progressive or a liberal - I am a radical.
Furthermore, if mainstream members of, say, the UK Conservative Party took this quiz, they'd be "extremely progressive." That's how far to the right our American political consensus is, objectively (and comparatively) speaking.

I'm sure it was affected by the wording of some of the questions. For example, spending in bad times and saving in good times is basic Keynesian economics, so it's hard to say I agree "more" or "less" with the government has to spend to stimulate the economy.
