Poll question: Forget the politics FOR ONCE. On a purely receptive scale, how do you rate the new logo?
Edited on Wed Sep-15-10 11:04 PM by blondeatlast
1-10 with 1 being "I hate it" and 10 being "Give me a bre--". er, I mean, "totally wicked awesome!"

Comments are, of course, welcome--but let's just try our best to restrict them to design and execution.

31. Word up
Part of what makes it SO corporate is the "Change that matters."

I am far more fond of advertising language than I should be. My all-time favorite slogan is "Ray's Food Place. We are the home of honest goodness."

Home.

Honest.

Goodness.

"Change that matters," (much like Ray's Food Place) uses the right buzz words in a combination that means absolutely nothing.

(Like, seriously, last week I went to Ikea and I bought a new silverware drying container, and I could easily argue that it was a change that mattered since it doesn't fall over three times a day spilling the clean silverware into the dirty sink.)

It's exactly what pisses me off about the modern democratic party. If the new slogan was "Fuck Republicans; they suck," then yes, it would certainly spark controversy, but it would also inspire individual democrats to take up the cry. Even if the slogan was "Democrats: kicking ass since 1933," with a big angry donkey logo, then it would still be motivational.

This new logo looks like the DC metro. x(

Maybe it's supposed to be "Drive" from a push button gear shift?

From a graphic design stand point: while I like the idea of "blue" as a symbol of Democrats, the dark and light pastel blues look weak. A combination of red, white and blue would be an re-affirmation of the colors of the country and the flag.

18. I might have been more in the neutral camp but
when I took another look at it just before voting, I realized that the circle is more prominent than the D. That's a bad design. If they were equal in "value" (color intensity or darkness), I might have been an 8 or 9, but the D looks weak and puny and surrounded and corraled and contained.

I hate it.

30. Definitely. And for cost.
My partner is a graphic designer illustrator of some small renown. I collaborate.

I'm supposing their was a small committee which rejected more assertive interesting ideas. The artist is probably more disappointed and frustrated than anybody because ultimately I'm sure his or her hand was used by a client who sucked any life or fun out of the project.

That happens all the time in the business we're in. Clients are not experts on conveying concepts but they imagine they know something. So a designer ends up doing what the client demands.

51. My guess is the "circle" is really the "O" taken from Obama's name,
and the artist was probably directed to use this, so as to tie it in with the original Obama logo.

From these confines, the artist then had to bring in something to do with "Democrats", resulting in the very bland "D". (A donkey might have been too kick-assy for Kaine). LOL

Once I had to design a logo for the Anesthesiology Department of a hospital. My prime directive was that in some way I had to incorporate a heart monitor. :boring: Was not too excited about this assignment, but that's what they wanted.

If I'm right about the circle representing the "O" in Obama, I think that is wrong. The Democratic party is certainly bigger than any one individual.

And I'm sure most people will think so.

We're in a time of amazing creativity in the graphic design field and it's too bad the DNC didn't take advantage of it.

Now whether the donkey deserved to be ditched, I don't know. I think it could have been redesigned into a contemporary and intriguing icon.

The website design and functionality is something of which the DNC can be proud. :D

47. I like it; it looks sporty or cheerleadery - but 'Change That Matters' sounds hollow I think.
The 'Democrats' font I like.

The 'change that matters' font and slogan is bad imo; it evokes disappointment: I thought that font looked a bit cheesy in 2008 and this slogan looks like a slightly ashamed, stale, partial rebrand instead of a reminding wink to 2008 to me.

Also it seems reactive to the Tea Party ie 'Their change doesn't matter, ours does' which is fine except it's too half-hearted. How about "Real Progress. Fair Play" or something:)

But I don't mind the logo and the first font. Just my external opinions. If you guys, especially those more positive towards Obama, hate it then it must be bad:)

49. My first thought was "isolation"
The "D" is isolated and alone from everything else.

Something about the weight of the circle throws it off for me. This logo doesn't talk, it doesn't tell you anything about Democrats.

The "Obama" logo was great. This was obviously designed to work well next to the "O" logo. Someone, or some committee sucked all the life out of this.

64. Committee driven indeed
These days business people (as well as political types) with no skill or keen perceptions about graphic design and no knowledge of commercial art symbolism often dictate to even the most experienced and skilled artists. They hire experts then they reject all the artist's concepts. It's as if they want the artist to be nothing more than a hand which draws and colours the businessperson's timid, dated or just plain bad ideas.

I bet everybody who's ever worked in the field of design and/or advertising knows exactly what I'm talking about. Too often the lamest designs end up as the finished product. :(

It actually is the the logo for Open Source "D" Programming Language.

Like any Linux OS or Open Source Program it is "Free To Use" and Usable in the "Public Domain"

Ya know,Like some of our Congresscritters SHOULD be!

67. Heck I don't even know what the old one looked like
I don't understand why people can't see the difference between a do nothing piece of soap suds waving in the wind like Kaine and a man who went after the republicans and go real Democrats elected to congress. What in the hell was Kaine appointed to do twiddle his thumbs. That seems to be all he has done since he took over Dean's job, which Dean was doing so damn well.

My first impression is that the design is very sparse and generic, when the Democratic Party to me represents diversity and innovation. I don't like the rubber stamp/copyright look to it too, to be honest.
It may grow on me, but only a little.

it would deserve all the disdain the circle D has gotten.

Spotting insipid gimmickry does not require a political ideology.

98. Resounding meh.
They could have had a contest and gotten a bunch of 2nd graders to compete to design the new logo and come up with something more interesting and appealing than this. And that would've been free. Whatever they paid the person that designed it, it was way too much.

105. i dont hate the logo, i hate what its trying to do
trying to be more hip and cool to draw voters seems to have been the republican strategy for the last few years.

it's purely superficial, and essentially says its better to not know shit about politics as long as you're on our side.

To me, the new symbol is just another step in the superficial direction, except now its on the democrats side.
