ABC, CBS still have not reported on Comey's revelation of wiretapping "hospital drama"

ABC and CBS still have not reported -- on either their evening news or morning news broadcasts -- former deputy attorney general James B. Comey's account of what NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams May 15 called a "rare glimpse of a high-level, late-night power struggle" over the National Security Agency's warrantless domestic wiretapping program. As NBC Nightly News justice correspondent Pete Williams reported May 15, Comey told the Senate Judiciary Committee that then-White House counsel Alberto R. Gonzales and then-White House chief of staff Andrew Card attempted to pressure then-Attorney General John Ashcroft "at his bedside ... to approve an extension of the secret NSA warrantless eavesdropping program over strong Justice Department objections," as Media Matters for America has noted.

By contrast, NBC News has continued to report on the story. The May 17 edition of NBC News' Today led with a report on the aftermath of Comey's testimony and the renewed calls for Gonzales' resignation due to his role in the "hospital drama." Today co-host Meredith Vieira opened the show's May 17 broadcast by stating: "Slippery slope? Attorney General Alberto Gonzales under fire again after some bombshell testimony claiming he tried to make an end run to get the government's controversial eavesdropping program renewed. Now, another Republican senator is calling for his resignation." She later reported that "Republican Senator Chuck Hagel now says that" Gonzales "should resign," making Hagel "the fourth GOP senator to do so."

In his Today report, Pete Williams noted that the controversy "goes back to one March night three years ago," when Justice Department and White House officials met in a "showdown over the NSA's program to intercept the calls of U.S. citizens suspected of talking to terrorists overseas." As Media Matters has noted, Comey, who served as acting attorney general while Ashcroft was ill, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that the Justice Department had concerns about the legality of the NSA domestic wiretapping program, and he and Ashcroft had met prior to the March 11, 2004, deadline for the program's renewal to discuss "concerns as to our ability to certify its legality."

report it.

Otherwise, the media fiddles while the Constitution burns.

You need Democrats getting or giving the BJs before it's newsworthy.

5. It is interesting that NBC , the house organ of GE, is reporting the
story.

ABC and CBS haven't reported the news for years. Even on DU, people often forget that Henry kissinger protege Ted Koppel got his big break with a nightly report "America Held Hostage" (Americans held hostage in Iran during Jimmy Carter's presidency) which evolved into Nightline. Later, when there were American hostages held hostage under Reagan, several of whom were executed, including the ill-fated Colonel Higgins, not even Nightline provided daily coverage of the "crisis". I guess America, according to ABC/Koppel, can only be "held hostage" when a Democrat is in the White House.

Corporate News coverage behind the Plastic Curtain is little but Rovian propaganda these days; but it has been bad for a long, long time.

7. I watched Pete Williams yesterday and one of the female
anchors. All I can say that is the there is progress - because - they did not smile, smirk, or make snide remarks about those who asked for the testimony of COmey. They were straight in their delivery. Now, I think that's progress. An absense of ridicule at the questioneers. They didn't turn it into a joke.

9. Ever since Sean McManus took over CBS News in 10/05 it's been downhill
Edited on Fri May-18-07 08:45 AM by leveymg
If you want to know who has the immediate say in what goes out over the air, it's this guy, Sean McManus, who took over the once proudly-independent CBS News operation after Karl Rove successfully arranged for Dan Rather's retirement.

It was McManus' decision to place Katie Courick in the network anchor chair, and for the general rightward shift and dumbing-down of CBS News content.

McManus also runs CBS Sports. Sean McManus was closely associated with ABC's Roone Arledge and has paralleled Arledge's path from managing sports broadcasting to managing both sports and news broadcasting.

He had no idea what I was talking about or at least he feigned ignorance as they don't have a talking point on this yet.

It was a long loving segment regarding Saint Ronnie Reagan's diaries. Then Katie smiled a vapid pseudo warm smile and the credits rolled on an image of Reagan perhaps with cowboy hat on horseback. It was a valentine. I guess nothing interesting is happening when this is what they produce. :eyes:

til they do, negative and truthful news about the bush administration or any republican will take a back back seat. They have to pass the Fairness Doctrine.AND GLENN BECK IS MESSING HIS PANTS ABOUT THIS. Did you see where he is yelling about the congress evening mentioning it.

He says if they do it will censure the news...What in the devil are they doing now...nothing informative gets on...unless you are watching about a run a way bride, the death of a sex idol, or a dumb blonde driving on a suspended license and maybe even under the influence. That's the kind of stories we get. I say just boycott the news altogether and write the sponsors that you don't appreciate their wanting to fill our heads full of junk.

It is shocking and so glaringly obvious that most of the gargantuan. corporate news organizations continue to operate as elements of the GOP. The most shocking aspect of the wholesale corruption of American media is the number of people that know the truth of the matter.

What do you think??

Maybe if Katy Couric actually reported the actual news and not just fluffy entertainment,

CBS Fires Batiste For Anti-Bush Advocacy, Hires Bush Aide To Engage In Pro-Bush Advocacy

In a recent VoteVets ad, Gen. John Batiste says, “I left the Army in protest in order to speak out.” Now, CBS has punished him for speaking out. Last night, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann reported, “General John Batiste loses his CBS job after appearing in an advertisement critical of the president.”

CBS News spokeswoman Sandy Genelius spoke to ThinkProgress this morning and confirmed that Batiste’s consulting contract has been canceled due to his participation in the VoteVets ad. Genelius said Batiste “inadvertently violated our standards” and therefore “we and the General mutually agreed to end his consultants’ arrangement with CBS News.”

When asked what standards Batiste violated, Genelius said he participated in “advocacy,” but noted that she had not seen the ad to verify the charge. Batiste’s only “advocacy” in the ad might be found in this statement: “Mr. President, you have placed our nation in peril. Our only hope is that Congress will act now to protect our fighting men and women.”

If the owned media won't report it, WE can get a lot of people to watch it with their own eyes & ears. If those stupid "pass this e-mail along to ten people and you'll receive $100" can make it into everyone's e-mail boxes, we can certainly get a LOT of eyes to see this too!

31. Jake Tapper of ABC News wrote this article about Gonzo/Comey yesterday
Edited on Fri May-18-07 09:02 PM by wishlist
I found this report by ABC's Jake Tapper describing how Comey's testimony has caused more Senators to ask for Gonzales' resignation. Tapper appears on TV regularly on ABC news reports so I would think ABC has covered this story although I haven't seen it on TV as I cannot stand Good Morning America and seldom watch the entire nightly newscasts either:

'Fifth GOP Senator Calls for Gonzales' to Resign; Democrats Call for No- Confidence Vote'

"Thursday's news follows gripping testimony from Deputy Attorney General James Comey, who on Tuesday told the Senate Judiciary Committee that Gonzales and then-White House chief of staff Andrew Card go to Ashcroft's sick bed at a hospital to seek his approval to certify the legality of the controversial NSA warrantless wiretapping program, after Comey, acting attorney general at the time, had refused to do so. Gonzales and Card stormed into Ashcroft's sick room in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital. Ashcroft refused to go along with them, saying Comey was the acting attorney general. The move infuriated Comey.

"I was angry," Comey said. "I thought I had just witnessed an effort to take advantage of a very sick man who did not have the powers of the attorney general."

This contradicted previous statements from Gonzales that there had "not been any serious disagreement about the program."
White House spokesman Tony Snow pooh-poohed Comey's testimony. "'Trying to take advantage of a sick man' -- because he had an appendectomy, his brain didn't work?" Snow asked.

In actuality Ashcroft had a severe inflammation of the pancreas, spent 10 days in the hospital and did not return to work for four weeks."
