Michael Moore came to rescue of his harshest critic
Much Moore for a foe in need

(snip)

For several years now, Jim Kenefick has been railing against the Oscar-winning director on Moorewatch.com. Recently, Kenefick wrote about the difficulty he was having paying his wife's medical bills. Fellow conservatives guided him toward a cheaper health insurer, but Kenefick said he still had trouble making payments.

"Someone e-mailed me and asked if an 'anonymous' benefactor could offer to pay my first year's premiums - $12,000," Kenefick wrote on his site.

He was skeptical when the check arrived. "I opened a whole new account at my bank, waited for it to clear, checked twice with bank personnel to make sure it wasn't a scam, and waited a full 60 days before spending the money. At that time, I started drawing on it and paying the monthly premiums until it was gone."

(snip)

Still, he doesn't sound especially grateful.

Having suspected Moore might be his secret patron, he contends that his bete noir made the gift just to publicize "Sicko," which takes aim at America's health-care system and, we've heard, touches upon Moore's covert generosity.

"I knew he was using me," said Kenefick. "Moore is going to try to make me into one of his little puppets."

He's crushed that the man he became famous for bashing has turned around and helped him. His life no longer serves a purpose.

He posts his problem on the internet. He gets help from an anonymous donor. And he automatically assumes that it's Moore trying to make him a puppet?

Paranoid much?

7. so how did people figure it out?
The donation was made anonymously.

This sort of thing is the Christian thing to do, love your enemies and all that. It would be scummy if Moore did it with the intention of making the charity public as a means of humiliation but we have no proof this is the case. If he made the donation anonymously and took precautions not to let his identity be known, if it was the moorewatch camp that made it public, especially with the quotes from the article, then I think the entire world will see who the asshole is here.

But, given that the source is a tabloid, everything should be taken with a grain of salt. I am reminded of this Ghandi quote, paraphrasing here: "I like your Christ and what he had to say. His followers should be more like him."

9. This is so emblematic of the differences between us
The freeper mindset is so sure that they are right that they stubbornly hold onto their beliefs despite anything that could sway them. The old believe on wednesday what you believed on monday despite what happened on tuesday thing.

If I received help from Rush Limbaugh, I would probably say something like, "Well, I still disagree with everything he believes and think that he works for everything I am against, but I guess there must be some good in him after all. Humanity surpasses politics." Something like that but not this guy. He takes the help, spend the money and then shits on the person who gave it to him. It's just impossible to shake his beliefs, without them he would fall apart. I think so much of these people are so afraid that they cling to these convictions and can't let them go.

Sure Moore really needs this guy to promote his movie and make a point? What would he do without him? :sarcasm:

To abandon your ideals for a sizable sum is what the cons are all about.

18. If Moore did do this, it certainly wasn't for the publicity
Kenefick, by acting like a dick and putting the story out there, however, is doing exactly what he's accusing Moore of - he's highlighted how awful our healthcare system is and shown himself and to a point all conservatives as ungrateful assholes. Not quite the message someone with the website, Moorewatch.com, would want to put out I would think.

31. "What kind of moron turns down a free 12 grand?"
... a principled one.

It's easy, you either don't take it or you do and say "thank you."

From his site:

If this was Moore behind it all, then I have to say...nice try, dude, but I’m not going to play your game. You can call it a cost of promotion. This site has sold more books and DVDs for you than that $12,000 could ever buy. You’ve gotten your money’s worth. If it was you, Mikey...your $12,000 doesn’t buy my silence. It won’t buy my affection, nor will I shy away from talking about whatever may or may not be in your new film. I’ll still be the same guy, expressing my opinion and trying his best to research facts you tend to skip over or ignore. All you bought for your money - if it was yours - was the peace of mind of knowing you actually helped someone who needed it. Wouldn’t it be nice if that was where is stayed? Ultimately, my accepting that donation has absolutely no bearing on the larger debate about health care in America, and I won’t engage you or anyone else in a bank-and-forth on it so you can sound-byte my words into something they aren’t.

42. This whole story blows my mind
The key part is the one about his wife's medical bills. Ironically, that's basically what Moore's new flick is about.

And Moore anonymously sends him the money, without even making mention of it.

First the Treasury Department, now this. You just can't buy this kind of publicity for any price! And at least we were spared the sight of Moore showing up in a fluorescent green bathing suit like Borat did last year. Yes, I'm very thankful for that.
