Here is how the "free" market works when drilling for oil
Many centrists and right wingers believe corporations operate in everyone's best interest only when the free market determines the necessary incentives to ensure responsible behavior. For example, BP, they argue, is the best one to manage the their own spill because their profit motive guarantees that they will operate in the public's best interest.

If you felt there was a bit of foot dragging over the spill response, the link below shows how oil companies operate when left to regulate themselves in the one of the freest markets in the world:

In the midst our own more local disaster, The Minerals Management Service celebrated the new "drill-baby-drill" policy by baking a cake embossed with "drill-baby-drill" as oil was gushing into the Gulf.

<...>"People are being really circumspect, not pointing the finger at Salazar and Obama," says Rep. Raul Grijalva, who oversees the Interior Department as chair of the House subcommittee on public lands. "But the troublesome point is, the administration knew that it had this rot in the middle of the process on offshore drilling – yet it empowered an already discredited, disgraced agency to essentially be in charge."

Self regulating? Our government fuckers actually told us "Let them eat cake."

The pollution and devastation you see in other parts of the world can happen here. We need to fight back against Obama's drill, baby, drill program. It is bad policy and bad science. It is reckless risk taking and a giant poke in the eye of our over-heated planet. What could possibly be worth the damage we will do to ourselves? I just doesn't make any sense as the sensible centrists would argue. By now you've probably figured out the that free-market centrist policies aren't working very well. Unregulated Wall Street pillaged your pensions, BP pillaged the Gulf and a huge recreation and agricultural area, Iraq didn't pay for itself with oil revenues, the health care industry doesn't really give a damn about your health, NAFTA and outsourcing didn't bring prosperity to America (unless you are Fortune 500 CEO) and so on.

Drill baby drill will make things worse. Just like these other "free market" policies are making things worse. A few will roll in cash, the rest of us will pay for it.

Videos here:

This is the legacy oil companies and their government sponsors bring to drill-baby-drill. It is reckless endangerment and the industry corruption and malfeasance is more than adequately documented. We need to stop this shit.
