NEW RECALL: Lick Your Chops Recalls Dry Cat Food
Lick Your Chops is recalling their Kitten and Cat dry food in the 4 lb. and 18 lb. bags with a Best By date of 4/29/08, due to the possibility this product may have been cross-contaminated.

The food doesn’t contain any wheat gluten, corn gluten or rice protein concentrate, but “it was produced around the same time there may have been other products manufactured that contained rice gluten, even though tests on these products did not indicate any presence of contamination”.

These items are made by Chenango Valley. The New York Times is suggesting that more recalls from them could be on the way (reg. req.) — which is likely since tomorrow is Friday.

Meanwhile, Chenango Valley Pet Foods said it is expanding its pet food recall to include foods that do not contain the suspect rice protein concentrate but were manufactured during periods when the formulas were being processed. The company said the recall is precautionary, due to the possibility of cross contamination.

How many more I ask, HOW MANY more pets must die from eating contaminated food. And then, what about us, We the People? When will our food began being recalled because of this problem?

5. Costco sent me a notice for their Kirkland Signature Premium Dog food 2-flavor
variety pack Canned Dog food Item #38436 best used by aug 21 08 through apr 15 09.

"Please immediately stop using any Kirkland Signature Lamb and Rice Canned Dog Food you may have that falls within the codes mentioned above and return them to your nearest Costco warehouse for a full refund. We are voluntarily recalling this item due to potential contamination with melamine, an industrial chemical used to make plastics and fertilizers that may be harmful to animals if consumed.

There have not been any out of the ordinary pet illnesses reported with this dog food.

3. They used to be a client of mine!
Fifteen years ago, maybe. I didn't even know they were still in business. I did shelf talkers, posters, mobiles, brochures. They were a good company back then, so it's good to see they're doing the right thing and recalling the food, even without a direct connection. I guess they're still a good company!

6. I called Purina
I called them because one of my cats just loves their Whiskas tartar-control treats. I was worried.

Purina told me they got "lucky" and that the only food they make that is affected is "Mighty Dog" and "Alpo" apparently - both are canned dog foods.

They said they did not get one of the bad batches that could have contaminated the rest of the food they produce.

I don't as a rule feed Purina to my cats as it is a poor quality food IMO (first ingredient tends to be corn). I have switched to feeding them pricey foods now from NutraMax. They are doing very well on Innovo Evo and Life's Abundance FYI and they don't eat much of it because it is very concentrated food and they don't need to eat as much of it to fill up it seems.

Try not to worry. I know I'm still worried!
