Police say stabbing of gay waiter at Denny's a hate crime

Police say the stabbing of a gay waiter inside a central California Denny's restaurant was a hate crime.

Santa Maria police Lt. Dan Ast says 24-year-old Curtis Martin was booked Thursday for investigation of attempted murder and committing a hate crime, saying he targeted the waiter because of his sexual orientation.

The waiter has neck and throat wounds. He's hospitalized and is expected to survive.
