Horrible home invasion story on CNN
Edited on Fri Sep-17-10 11:45 AM by Renew Deal
This video is on the front of CNN right now. It's a home invasion, rape, robbery, arson, and murder from 2007.

1. From 2007? Let me posit a hypothesis...
Stoking fear of Muslims, Mexicans, and other one-eyed, seven-toed aliens in a critical election cycle, perhaps?

2. Reporting on currently on-going testimony in the trial of the two alleged murderers.
But you were close.

14. It's the testimony that these two guys...
broke into the house, beat the lone survivor almost to death with a baseball bad, tied the wife and daughters to their beds, raped all three of them, killed the wife, then set fire to the place, killing the two daughters.

Why? What testimony do you think it is?

11. The trial is going on here in New Haven right now, which is why CNN is
reporting on it. The older defendant, Hayes, is being tried first.

This case has had ongoing ramifications. There was enormous difficulty in seating a jury who could honestly claim to be impartial. Even after they did manage to get a jury, once the trial started earlier this week, two jurors backed out after learning of some of the more gruesome details and one was dismissed by the judge because he piped up in the midst of the proceedings, questioning the prosecution's strategy (!).

It's hard not to follow this trial, with all the publicity. The jurors have been shown photos of the bodies of the victims, the mother and oldest daughter burned beyond recognition. The mother was strangled and the girls probably died of smoke inhalation.

Dr. Pettit is having to go through this nightmare again and will have to go through it yet another time when the other alleged perp will be tried. How this man doesn't commit suicide amazes me...I don't know how anyone lives with this.

People here are pretty shaken by this horrific crime. Don't be so quick to make any assumptions...

18. I had the same thoughts about Dr Pettit.
Seeing these 2 brought to justice is probably the only thing keeping him going.

I work in Wallingford CT which is one town over from Cheshire. Several of my coworkers were neighbors to the Pettits. This case is heavy on the hearts of many in this area.

6. Fascinating. Considering that TruTV is currently covering this trial
and CNN and TruTV are both owned by Time Warner. This can only be a conincidence.

12. The trial of one of the defendants began this week. That is why there is all this publicity.
As new information emerges during testimony, we are experiencing a renewed sense of horror. Since the trial is taking place here in New Haven, the media is fixated on every moment.

We'll go thru this all again when the second defendant is tried...there is an outpouring of grief and of support for Dr. Pettit and both the Pettit and Hawke family...

16. This horrific crime rocked the entire tri-state area when it happened
Although these events are rare, they still have the power to make you shudder. If found guilty, I hope the perpetrators are given the maximum penalty allowed by the law.

17. The thing that gets me is that some idiots posted comments blaming the doctor for not doing more to
try to save his family.

Uh, the guy was hit in the head with a baseball bat, fell unconscious, and was then tied up in the basement.

He was lucky he woke up as the house was burning, and was able to free himself to go outside and seek help. His wife and kids were already dead at this point.

What exactly more could he have done to save them?

Interesting how his neighbors don't think he failed, but some internet tough guys posting from the comfort of their keyboards thousands of miles away did.

20. It's a wonder Pettit is alive in the first place. He testified that he takes blood thinners
for a heart irregularity and was fearing that he would bleed to death.
