There was a bit of good news/bad news in today's release of new state and local jobless numbers: unemployment in California nudged up in August, while Sacramento County saw a slight drop in jobless numbers, compared to July.

The state's jobless rate increased to 12.4 percent in August, up a percentage point from July's 12.3 percent, Employment Development Department officials announced Friday, as statewide payrolls dropped by 33,500. Sacramento County's unemployment rate in August was 12.8 percent, compared with 13.1 percent in July.

Job losses statewide hit most employment sectors from construction and manufacturing to transportation, utilities and health services, according to state employment officials. Government jobs, as more temporary federal U.S. Census positions went away, posted the largest decline over the month, shedding 9,200 jobs.
