What? Poverty in America?

The numbers below tell the story and the pic above expresses the sentiment of too many fat-cat politicians who have lost touch with real Americans.

The number of people living in poverty has climbed to 14.3 percent of Americans, with the ranks of working-age poor reaching the highest level since at least 1965.

The Census Bureau says that about 43.6 million people, or 1 in 7, were in poverty last year. That’s up from 39.8 million, or 13.2 percent, in 2008.

The number of people lacking health insurance rose from 46.3 million to 50.7 million, due mostly to the loss of employer-provided health insurance during the recession.

And Republicans are running on a platform of repealing the health care bill and blocking tax cuts for 98% of Americans. Too surreal for words.

2. Perhaps the
incessant cavalcade of shiny things will begin to lose their almost erotic luster as we collectively plunge into the stark, cold abyss that is revealed as the final triumph of the winners of the Class War?

5. Probably not.
We 'Murkins have so totally bought into The Rugged Individualism expectation, that we don't know how to build community.

Without community, we are very lonely and fearful.

To fill that gap, we will always need the shiny things.

4. Like unemployement, the true figures are much worse.
I don't know if you have done much reading on this, but the "poverty level" was figured in the '60s, and it doesn't work for the conditions today.

There is much more poverty, and it is much deeper, than these figures.

Love the cartoon-- says it all!
