I have a right wing co-worker I'm buddies with, but I don't really trust her, because she's two-faced, close minded, and on top of that, she's a bigot. Other than that, she's a nice person, LOL. When I call her out for her bigotry, she denies it or gets angry and sullen. I call her out very subtly, but bigots don't like being called out at all. They'd rather you be silent while they disparage good people. She's ruined my wanting to continue with our company Toastmasters (if I let her, that is), because of a comment she made, which has made me very aware of her body language and facial expressions whenever certain people get up to do a speech. We have a lot of secondary English speakers in our company's Toastmasters. She made a comment one day to me saying that they needed to learn to speak proper English. The reason they were even in Toastmasters was because their bosses forced them to join. Then she proceeded to rake a very sweet girl from India who had given a wonderful speech that day through the coals until it made me sick to my stomach. I told her I was impressed with certain people because: 1. "They" (you know, the people who can't speak proper English) not only speak English very well, they also speak a couple other languages. 2. They often hold higher positions in the company then either she or myself does. and 3. They had the balls to get out of their comfort zone (their native land) and come here to American, where they live and work amongst us (god forbid!). She did not like that at ALL. This is a person who does not have a college degree and thinks I'm a genius (dear god, I am NOT even close, LOL). And as a disclaimer, even I do not speak "proper English".
Also, I love going to Toastmasters just north of Seattle, WA because it is just a given that you're liberal (even in the small podunk towns outside of Seattle). I still feel the tension amongst certain members when either President Obama or liberal policies are praised, but fuck it, it's so worth it. I love living in Washington after many years in Utah, because the tables are turned and the conservatives are the ones who have to lay low and be apologetic. :toast:
