Pressuring advertisers works, folks!!
Host's tirade affects KOA
Three advertisers react after rant against Muslims

By Janet Forgrieve, Rocky Mountain News
May 18, 2007

Peggy Beck's tradition of trading catering services for advertising on Clear Channel Communication's radio shows shifted a bit this week.

Newman's comments came during a report about the arrests of six men in a foiled attempt to attack a military base at Fort Dix, N.J. Newman advocated a law requiring all Muslim immigrants here, including naturalized U.S. citizens, to wear GPS tracking devices.

"And the FBI and the NSA should monitor their phones and their e-mails, all communications - electronic - at all times, as well as bug their places of work and their residences," he said.

Newman also said the United States should impose a "moratorium" on Muslim immigration.

Colorado Media Matters, a nonprofit that monitors conservative media for inaccuracies and examples of what it considers egregious comments, picked up on Newman's remarks.

Denver-based Progress Now Action called for members and visitors to its Web site to contact the show's sponsors and ask them to pull their support. A list on Progress Now Action's Web site shows 11 sponsors, along with their addresses and phone numbers. Three Tomatoes Catering, Ralph Schomp Automotive and Excel Roofing were crossed out as of noon on Thursday.

Station's apology

KOA posted this apology on its Web site after anti-Muslim comments were made by host "Gunny" Bob Newman on his May 8 show:

• "Newsradio 850 KOA understands that some of you may have been offended by remarks Gunny Bob made regarding Muslim immigrants to the United States. That was not the intention. 850 KOA believes in being fair and respectful while encouraging discussion and debate of complex issues."
