Rick Santorum makes a "There are no gays in Iran" style comment
"The size and scope of government is directly related to the virtue of her people. Go into the neighborhoods in America where there is a lack of virtue, what will you find? Two things. You will find no families, no mothers and fathers together in marriage. And you will find government everywhere. Police, social service agencies, why? Because without faith, family and virtue, government takes over."

All unwed teenage mothers on welfare in those poor neighborhoods.

1. Well, he should be glad he's no longer part of government, shouldn't he?

2. Faith, family, and virtue didn't help my poor family.
I had two parents who were married to each other. We went to church. We were good people. And we were still achingly poor, doing without decent food, heat, and warm, well-fitting clothes/shoes every single year. Looking back now, I can't help but wonder WHY our own church never helped us. We occasionally had anonymous boxes of food left on our porch from other area churches, but never anything from our own. One of the church ladies DID mention us in front of the congregation, but only to hold us up as a "bad example" because we missed church two Sundays straight while my Mom was suffering from a herniated disc in her back.

It wasn't long after that incident that we stopped going forever, and I realized that people who claim superior "faith" and "virtue", often possess neither.

3. Absolute bullshit
Look at the depression and WWII years. "The government" was EVERYWHERE. They ran everything that was important (Post Office, power stations and power lines, road construction, sanitation and water), you know things that SUPPORTED BASIC LIFE in a town.

In addition, "the government" employed thousands in creating infrastructure, managing food production and making war weapons and supplies.

As a percentage of the population, government workers were far more prevalent and important than today.

And yet THESE were the "times of virtue" that conservatives all crow about.

5. Would he rather that the police concentrated their efforts in places with less crime?

Of course you find the police and the social services doing more in areas with more problems! Is he suggesting that this should not be the case?
