A tea partier just knocked on my door |
|
Some woman just knocked on my door and said "Good afternoon, do you have a minute?" My dog was barking like mad. I am home alone and she is very protective when no one else is here. The lady had a brief case and was trying to hand me some written material so I figured she was selling something.
So over the barking and through the screen door, I said "Sorry I don't buy anything from folks who knock on my door."
She said "Well I'm not selling anything. I am just a hard working American and I am here to ask you to vote in the upcoming election to take back America."
This is when I figured out she must be one of the teabaggers who I just read in the local paper are out this weekend to GOTV in my area. I have a Democratic representative in the state house and a Democratic congressman in DC. So any taking back would be FROM the Democrats.
I said "I am very happy with my current representation and don't think we need to take America back from anyone or to anywhere."
My dog started barking even louder. The lady said "Wow. She is very protective, isn't she?"
I said "That depends. Are you door knocking for Republicans?"
She said "Yes."
I said "Well she's a smart dog. She hates Republicans and she hates tea partiers even more."
The woman turned to walk away. I grabbed ahold of my dog by the collar, opened my door and said "Please mark this address off of your list. We are a strong Democratic family and highly allergic to tea."
She left without even saying goodbye. :)

they don't have much to say when i tell them i'm quite happy with my faith. When they ask inevitably what faith i belong to, i tell them i'm a druid (actually i'm still bardic, but they don't know what that is)... really you can't imagine the looks i've gotten. I've had one JW literally turn and run from my doorstep. The best was when i had a very young JW who was obviously interested and his partner (older, more experienced door knocker) was highly disapproving of the questions he started asking... she left in a huff and i think he may have gotten in trouble for being inquisitive...

are pretty nice too. most often it's a older/younger team, hey, it works on cop shows... i enjoy with them, and the older man who i've had the most contact is always amazed that i'm able to turn the conversation away from what he wants to talk about to what i want to talk about. i figure he knows i'm not interested, but i'm giving them and excuse to sit and rest, since my neighborhood is fairly large and my house is on the end of a rather long street. my favorite comment was after he first met me he said with a tongue as silver as mine i could be a great car salesman.... my reply was with a heart as black as mine, better make it a used car salesman
one or two more visits and i think i'll have him converted to being a packer fan....

They used to bother my mom. She didn't buy what they were selling, but she was too nice to turn them away. At first it was 2, then 3, etc. and on each visit they would stay longer. On their last visit they brought 7 people to her house and stayed for an hour and a half. After I called and asked them not to visit we never saw them again.

I've always found that if you tell them you're a member of a competing superstition, or a none it only encourages them to visit more often and try harder when they do, figuring you're in desperate need of their brand of salvation.I usually claimed either Buddhism or Taoism and would quiz them on their knowledge of either at the least it prevented them from running their spiel and maybe helped convince them I wasn't desperate.I also usually tried to outpolite them it throws them off their game disrupting their trained routine.

Teabaggers and fundie proselytizers: Don't even THINK of knocking here!
But I couldn't bring myself to projecting such hostility (and besides, the sign and your "Welcome" mat would certainly give mixed messages).
Better to deal with it as you do, as it comes. And who knows--maybe you can do some proselytizing, too. Turnabout, as they say, is fair play... :)

That is like the bumper sticker I saw... "Born Just Fine the First Time!"
We get quite a few religious folk knocking on our door and I always ask, "Will my dogs go to heaven, too, so we can be together?" Sometimes they say yes, and I know they are lying. If they say no, I say, "You have nothing I want or need, please go away and don't come back."

you could have continued to talk through the screen door, but chose to open the door and restrain a barking dog by the collar.
i would characterize that as highly threatening, and unnecessary, and not remotely "peaceful". it's the equivalent of taking the gun from your holster and aiming it.
aside from that, i loved the story!

Seriously, though, is that the only thing you took from that story? Geeze Louise, you sure know how to be a buzzkill. If anything, I did not really pick up on that aspect of their interaction, but IMHO that adds to it. I hope that I get the opportunity, although my dog is a Pekinese, but he hates Teabaggers too. :)

I soooo envy you! When I got a knock on my door this morning, it was only a neighbor bringing me a piece of my junk mail that wound up in her mailbox.
There are times when, in a really perverse mood, I WISH a 'bagger or a fundie proselytizer would knock on my door. At those times it's probably best that they haven't come by--for both our sakes! :)

that any teabagger who came here would have to be illiterate. Of course, many of them probably ARE illiterate. But the bright colors should get their attention.
If that doesn't work, I have an eighty pound dog who should get their attention. She is a Lab/Dobie mix. She is protective, too, and she has a deep, loud bark. No one needs to know that she loves people.

I'm inclined to agree with those who suggest asking probing questions about what they want to take America back from or back to. Really engage them and see if there's any chance they'll start to get it about how much they are being lied to and misled by the "Tea Party".
Also, the "hard working Americans" need to understand how much they are being shafted when the top one or two percent gets such huge tax breaks, and so many in the supposed middle class are genuinely struggling.

|
But my experience has been that it is true, that dogs can sense feelings and moods and your dog probably learned long ago how you felt about some people that gave off a certain vibe....and that persistent barking was telling you that something was wrong. dogs may be dumb animals....but then just what does that mean.

Since dogs bark in the presence of terminators...

the only logical conclusion is teabaggers are actually terminators.

69. A Better Way to Handle It |
|
although the comment about the dog was clever, and it's great that you sent her packing, a better way to handle it would be this"
Teabagger: I am just a hard working American and I am here to ask you to vote in the upcoming election to take back America
Democrat: I'm a hardworking American too. And I'm so upset by some of the stuff I see happening in this country. But I don't know how we can fix it.
At this point, the teabagger will probably think you are on their side, or can be brought over to it. She will launch into her sales pitch (and they are indeed selling something).
Listen to the pitch, but at some point say, "Hmmm. That sounds very interesting, but..."
Like a good salesperson, she may try to overcome your objection, mistakenly seeing it as an opportunity. Let her try. Then, at the end say, "You know, I'm more interested in taking our country forward than back. I don't think I'll be voting for your candidate(s), but thank you for stopping by."
By this, you have taken up some of the teabagger's time, preventing them from visiting as many houses/talking to as many voters.
I dunno, maybe it's not really better. You'd be wasting your own time too. And it's kind of mean. But then, so are some teabaggers.

|
It's only smart to canvas houses that are either unknown or independents. Knocking on the door of a member of the opposite party OR someone who already votes in your same party is a big time waster...as far as neighborhood canvasing goes.
There are times when going door to door might be appropriate, but it's already known to not be terribly effective. Besides you just piss them off, as she did you, when she knocked on your door. Preaching to the choir is also not time well spent.
If they are wasting their time. Fine by me.

We use targeted lists when we canvass. Someone just sent this woman out cold with no list. No way would our address be on any GOP canvass list.
We had a GOP state rep about 5 years ago and he knocked on my door one time. He introduced himself and then said "I know you are a strong Democratic family but I'd like to leave a brochure with you that lists what I have accomplished since being elected". I took the brochure and he said thank you and he left. That's the only other time in the 17 years we have lived here that any republicans have canvassed our house.

Republicans don't canvass at our house. In this state we have lists of voters identified by party affiliation. There are 4 registered Democrats at this address. Plus I am an elected precinct chair. No one canvassing for the GOP - and especially not a tea partier who wants to take our country back - has any business knocking on our door. It's a complete waste of their time.
I have worked on campaigns for years. You have targeted lists. No one goes out knocking on any door just cause it's in a particular neighborhood. Candidates and party workers prepare walk lists. We never knock on GOP doors. Never.
Candidates have a hard time getting volunteers because canvassing is hard and time consuming work.

The teabagger targeted the wrong person, and paid for it as a consequence.
From what I understand, p2blk said that no GOP candidates would target her. It's painfully obvious that the teabagger was not prepared to deal with the concept of people who are satisfied.

106. Best dog I have ever had. Seriously. |
|
Had nothing but mutts before her. Then a close friend who was disabled and could no longer work decided to start breeding Springers. So as a favor to her, I bought one. And she has literally blown us away since the day we brought her home. SHe was 8 weeks old, we showed her the door, she scratched on it, went outside and peed. She has never once had an accident in the house. Never chewed on anything either. When she picked up something as a puppy, we took it away and said no. That was it.
This dog is amazing. The vet said they call them velcro dogs because they are so loyal to their humans.
Other than a tendency to get fleas, she's never been a problem. We also have to watch for ear infections. But they are no big deal.
I can't recommend this breed highly enough.

Just my opinion, but most of these "hard-working Americans" would be on our side if they had someone they trusted giving them our side.
Smart come-backs are easy and satisfying, but they don't win elections or change people's minds.
I don't see how insulting people helps our cause. Remember how it makes us feel when we're on the other end of it . . .

What is insulting and offensive is someone coming to the door and declaring she's working to "take back America."
A wingnut who is motivated enough to do volunteer canvassing is a true believer--not someone whose mind is going to be changed by a few minutes of conversation.
I'm a firm believer in civil discourse, but I feel no obligation to give my time to any Tom, Dick or Harry political opponent who knocks on my door and disturbs my dog and my peace.

As a nearly lifelong resident of this state and this area, I refuse to try to engage these crazies. They tried to ruin our schools 10 years ago by taking evolution out of our Science curriculum. We didn't engage them, we educated the citizens of Kansas and the crazy anti-evolution school board members were voted off the board. Sanity returned to the Science standards.
Engaging a lunatic at my front door through the screen over a barking dog isn't going to accomplish anything. I felt (still do) that my best plan was to make her go away quickly.

|
As a matter of fact, I have done canvassing, as well as phone-banking, computer entry of those reports, and a variety of other campaign tasks--none of which is especially relevant, by the way.
I also happen to respect inividuals who have the motivation and commitment to volunteer their time to work in political campaigns, as we have. But that doesn't mean that I have to listen to any tripe that someone wants to deliver at my door. And no matter how admirable it may be that some individual is volunteering time to work for for her Republican cause, the 'take back our country' meme is offensive and and often has some ugly connotations.
P2BLK conveyed her disinterest in hearing the spiel without being threatening or using any profanity, thus saving her time and the canvasser's. I've seen some rude political discussions--as I imagine you have, too--and this doesn't even come close to qualifying.
There is no justification for blowing this up into more than it is, or for over-reacting. And that view seems to be supported by the contributions to this thread.

The smart ones switch to the Democratic party. Like our governor.
I've done plenty of engaging Republicans. They come to our legislative forums and make rude comments. They invaded our health care rallies last summer. They invaded town hall meetings. My congressman was forced to cancel his townhalls because he was getting death threats.
The right wingers who are participating in the political process in this state want to control women's health care decisions, applauded the murder of Dr Tiller (and in case you haven't noticed, no one is taking his place), don't believe in evolution, want to deport all the 'illegal aliens', do not support sensible comprehensive health care for all Kansans and are now opposed to school funding.
I see no reason to reach out to these lunatics. I applaud the sensible moderates who switch to the Democratic party. But the far right crazies are just that - crazy.
