Obama tells liberals to calm down
Edited on Sun Sep-19-10 05:57 AM by SHRED
"Oh HELL NO!"

“Democrats, just congenitally, tend to get – to see the glass as half empty,” Obama said at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in Greenwich, Conn. “If we get an historic health care bill passed – ‘oh, well, the public option wasn’t there. ‘ If you get the financial reform bill passed – ‘then, well, I don't know about this particularly derivatives rule, I'm not sure that I'm satisfied with that.’ ‘And gosh, we haven’t yet brought about world peace, and – I thought that was going to happen quicker.’

As his supporters laughed, Obama added, “You know who you are.”

Yes we do know who we are Mr. President, your Chief of Staff Mr. Emanuel told us.

1. Obama's quote used the word "Democrats", not "Liberals"... learn to read

6. Yes, Politico used the word "liberals" in its headline.
But in doing so, they used a word that the President, in fact, did not. Reading beyond a manufactured headline and seeing for one's self what was actually said -- rather than relying on an editor's interpretation via said headline -- is generally a good idea.

9. insults such as "learn to read" are over the top when the poster simply
and accurately stated the headline

24. That's all they got is insults. It was totally predictable.
Edited on Sun Sep-19-10 10:50 AM by bobbolink
We horrible liberals were telling them over a year ago that if Obama kept acting like a Republican, that the party would be in trouble this fall.

Well, here we are. "We told you so."

And they are scared, so their reaction is to insult us.

What they think that gains, I haven't a clue. I've asked them repeatedly what they gain with that, but...

........crickets.

So, I really no longer care. I know who I am and what I need, and their insults just prove how bankrupt the party has become.

I don't give a shit.

21. Speaking of learning to read...
His words were directed at party members who feel that his policies are either too far right, or too weak. Those people would be described as liberal Democrats, or "liberals".

Using the word "liberals" is actually much more forgiving than the broader "Democrats". Unless you're saying that most of the party is comprised people who share the sentiments he described, and "centrists" like Obama are a tiny fringe on the right edge of the party-- is that what you're saying?

30. Please. That makes no sense.
Imagine, someone being a Democrat and a liberal at the same time. Preposterous!

He said "Democrats" and he meant "Democrats", not "liberals". Seriously, how can you confuse Democrats and liberals? Geeez...

12. If you bring good jobs with benefits back, Mr. President,
you will be a hero for the ages.

If you continue to take money from people who send jobs to China, either outright or by demanding that companies ship all jobs overseas before they can get a loan or equity investment, you will always be held in low esteem throughout U.S. history.

Even Hoover didn't do that.

15. What's wrong regretting that the PO was not in the bill? What's wrong regretting the derivative
rule was not in the bill.

If he was going to point the finger at somebody, it would be nice to point it at those who are responsible for this not happening. I like Obama, but feel tired of the bashing of this administration at those who point out that it could have been better. Should progressives not fight for progress.

Edited on Sun Sep-19-10 08:57 AM by NYC Liberal
Ceaselessly complaining, never acknowledging the positive, always finding some problem, some reason why everything just isn't 'good enough'.

He hit the nail on the damn head: "gosh, we haven’t yet brought about world peace, and – I thought that was going to happen quicker"

Also: the headline is bullshit. He did not address LIBERALS nor did he at any point say anything about "calming down."

17. His statement shows not only that
he disrespects liberals but that he has refused to say a word for the real culprits that have stopped progressive legislation. Never a word about Nelson, Bayh, Lincoln or any of them or the Blue Dogs in the House. We had the majorities, we had 60 in the Senate there was no excuse not to pass more progressive health care. It shows who he really is and it isn't who most of us thought we were voting for in '08.
Those who see him as all perfect are willing to accept less without thought of what should have been. He isn't a king, he's an elected official and discussing this issue is part of the democratic process.

18. It's not a statement, it's a scripted joke. Nelson, Bayh and
Lincoln are not funny. One cannot craft a joke about something that is boring, except to point out its boringness.

And they say the left has no sense of humor.

nothing funny about obstructionist right wingers. But their is nothing funny about using liberals as an excuse for not passing a progressive agenda. People dying, suffering and going broke are not funny at all.

except all the times he does. Perhaps you missed those.

I've been unemployed for almost two years. Thank God I still have my sense of humor and can laugh at myself. Sometimes that's all that keeps you sane.

we could have passed much more without them obstructing.
I hope you find a job soon and you aren't part of the 99ers group. My sons have jobs with health benefits but they are not good jobs, not what they went to college for but we are thankful for what they have at this point.

29. I believe there have been some well-placed potshots taken
at the more conservative among the Ds.

And, owing to my unemployment, I've been forced to re-evaluate who I am, what I want to do. I've gone back to my creative self, and I've accomplished something in the three months I've been actively creating that I never thought I would be able to do; especially in not such a short time. For the first time in 20 years, I love facing every new day. Sure, I have money worries, but some of these days those too will pass. It's a cliché, I know, but my unemployment has turned out to be a blessing.

19. He called out the Blue Dogs a couple of days ago.
And I didn't see anyone complaining about that. If he meant Liberals or Progressive, why would he have any qualms calling them out by name as well? Except for the whole hypersensitivity issue maybe.

He's right about what he is saying. None of this stuff happens overnight, especially not in this political climate and not after the cluster f*ck he walked into, and realistic grown ups can figure that out.

Bush never ridiculed his base, even after the 2006 midterm loss. Is Obama dumber than Bush? In this case, the answer is yes.

If sucking was the objective Obama’s presidency has been an unmitigated success.

i think it all makes sense if he is a Republican plant.

33. Having been to literally hundreds of rubber chicken democratic...
functions over the years, I can safely say that most of the humorous comments are aimed right back at the people sitting in the audience.

It's good natured fun that the republicans can't seem to direct at themselves.

Not saying it is right or wrong, just that that is the way it is, from my experience.

And I have been going to these functions since the mid 70's...
