Still Homophobic After All These Years

09/18/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire

Well, we know who hates American freedoms, and it appears to be members of the Republican Party. Yet another GOP local group wants to make it illegal to be lesbian or gay. This time, it is Montana. The policy position actually dates back to 1997 when the Montana Supreme Court struck down laws which made it illegal to engage in homosexual acts. Twelve years later, the party’s official platform still has that in it, and it does not seem to be going away despite the fact that it is no longer seen as being bad to be lesbian or gay in the United States, for the most part.

State Senator John Brueggeman stated “I looked at that and said ‘You’ve got to be kidding me?’ Should it get taken out? Absolutely. Does anybody think we should be arresting homosexual people? If you take that stand, you really probably shouldn’t be in the Republican Party.” While that is a nice sentiment, the reality is that many within the Republican Party still believe that homosexuality is wrong and that lesbians and gays should either be arrested or forced into conversion therapy, which has never worked. In fact, Republican candidate for the Senate in Delaware, Christine O’Donnell, is a long time proponent of “reparative therapy”.

Even at that, the United States Supreme Court struck down all laws outlawing homosexual acts in 2003 with the case Lawrence v. Texas. Same-sex marriage is now legal in five states and the District of Columbia, and the US Federal Courts have ruled that Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is unconstitutional. Still, Montana’s GOP platform still states “We support the clear will of the people of Montana expressed by legislation to keep homosexual acts illegal.” Most of the legislation that deemed homosexual acts illegal dated back to the founding of the US when it was a severe crime, and included in some places, death.

2. Once Again
I feel like a Jew in the beginnings of Nazi Germany. I thought when we elected Obama President things would change. Well, they haven't, he has proven he is just another politician and one without balls. The tea party is growing in influence, Palin is a possible candidate for President, a quarter of our population is rushing to institute christian sharia, and states like Montana want to jail people on RW moral bullshit. Can anyone give me hope and a reason to not get the fuck out of this mess we call America?
